Recommend me some glass
« on: January 30, 2009, 01:38:11 am »
Last Sunday I found myself unable to resist temptation.  I picked up a Remington 700 SPS with a 20" barrel in .308 complete with a Gemtech TPR-S quick-mount suppressor.  I'm all jazzed up just typing this!  ;D  The rifle was customized with the quick-mount at the place I bought it (The Scottsdale Gun Club).

Now it needs glass.  The rifle and suppressor (not including the tax stamp which I have yet to pay) cost just over $1200.  I'm willing to spend up to $1k for a scope.

Throw me some recommendations.  I know it "depends on what I want to do with it".  So... TELL ME what I want to do with it.  ;)

For a rapid use tactical application call George and order yourself a PFI RR800-2

It is a fantastic bang for the buck scope.  I don't know what George can offer it for but MSRP is $635 and that is still a deal.  I have one on my Tikka T3 Tactical and went to 800 yards at LRI without elevation adjustments.  If it matches your rifle that well you will never want to give it up.

If your application is X-ring Competition Shooting then you may want something else.  But for practical long range applications the PFI is hard to beat.

Congrats on the new gun! ;D (Though, I don't think you got the memo. You don't need it. I have fewer guns than you, so you should give it to me).

We want pics as soon as (or before) you get it all put together. :neener

Thanks Beamish.  I'll look at that.

Yeah... you're right ridata.  Look for a shipment from me soon.  ;D

I do plan to post picturs and do a full write-up once I take posession of the suppressor.  Probably end of March, beginning of April.

On the PFI RR800, I think that's 595 delivered to your door, Tman.
I'm a huge fan of the PFI stuff... because once you are zeroed - you are faster to bullets on target than any other scope out there next to the Zeiss Rapid Z... which uses the same system.  But with the Zeiss you can get a 4.5 to 14 scope which might be nice.
I'm also a fan of Swarovksi's new ballistic turret system... I might get one myself (Never could have before I became a dealer but now that's an option thanks to their dealer program.)
I've seen all the other so called TACTICAL type scopes go belly up.  But not these.  And not Night Force - which is the obvious choice if you didn't care about the money spent.

Reading up on that scope.  I like!

With that scope, you just zero at one of the lines and then use the reticle for 100 to 800?  No clicks, eh?

Yes.  You zero at 100 and the use the BDC at range.  To shoot beyond 800 yards, you use the 800 yard cross-hair and adjust the turrets for the remaining drop.  I think I was only 14 clicks (1/4MOA turret) to reach 1,000 yards.   The horizontal hold offs are in 1/2 or 1/4 value for full wind (depends on the range if there are multiple ticks or not)

Chad (ccd8541 on here), who markets for Pride-Fowler, uses one on his 18" AR in 5.56mmm.  He zeroed to an intermediate range, I think 300 yards, so using the other range marks his known error is minimal: something like 2" high at 100 yards and 6" low at 600 yards - all within the a reasonable error for a practical shot.

When you put that scope on a rifle it matches well, it is brilliant.  As long as your muzzle velocity and the bullet BDC are within the parameters it will be on target.  My T3 shot 2600 fps using .308 168 gr Gold Medal Match and the BDC was dead on.

I'm not familiar with the PFI, but if that is the type of scope that you are looking for, I have seen the Zeiss with the Rapid Z reticle and was favorably impressed with it.  In terms of price and optical quality I thought it stacked up very well, particularly against the Leupold that I was comparing it with.

Well, while I do have several rifles, I'm not really up on my long-range shooting.  I know the mechanics of it, but not the practice.  The rifle mentioned has a 20" barrel.  I'm not sure if that matters much over a 26" barrel.  And I'm interested to find out if and how much the suppressor will affect accuracy.

I gather the only difference between the -1 and -2 is the 3-9 vs. 10 power?

They are so far out of my prices range that I have only third hand knowledge, but Schmidt and Bender are supposedly the best.
My goal is to be +20/-1000 before 2010!

Yes.  I prefer the fixed 10x.  I also have a 3-9x in the .22LR BDC but it stays on 9x

The 3-9 is a first focal plane scope, the reticle changes size with magnification so it is always the same size relative to the target and the BDC remains accurate.  At the lower 3x, 4x, 5x , however, the full reticle is harder to see.  If you were going to use it for hunting and scanning for targets (particularly in brush/forest) then maybe the lower power option is better, but I think it just makes more sense to carry a pair of binos with a larger field of view for that.
