Optics for a FAL carbine
« on: October 27, 2008, 03:27:51 am »
I've got a 16" DSA paratrooper FAL carbine on hand.  It's currently wearing an Aimpoint Comp-C3 in a Larue mount, but I can't help but feel I'm not getting the most out of a .308 with a 1x optic.

Whatever I end up with, I'm going to save up for, so cost isn't a huge factor (though a Schmidt & Bender Short Dot will likely remain out of my price range).

What is a factor is versatility.  This rifle is a battle rifle, not a "counter sniper" or "designated marksman" setup.  I'm looking for an appropriate "general purpose" scope.  The optic has to be good from short to medium ranges, maybe 400 yards on the high end.  It's got to have generous eye relief for odd shooting positions.  It's got to be durable and reliable, and illumination is a must.

I'm probably not going to be doing a lot of door-kicking or across-the-room shooting, so I can get away with sacrificing a bit of close-in speed.  Anyway I prefer to engage zombies at longer ranges; they're only dangerous at contact distance!

I'm milling fixed and variable scopes.  If fixed, no more than three or three-point-five power.

I'm considering a Leupold Mk.IV MR/T 1.5-5x20.  On the upside, it'll allow for excellent accuracy at long ranges. On the down side, it's battery dependent and the illumination isn't visible in the daytime.

I'm also looking at the Trijicon ACOG 3.5x35mm with the red chevron reticle.  It's bright enough to use the "Bindon Aiming Concept" at close ranges (though still not efficient as a 1x optic for that) and will be very tough.  It has generous eye relief and doesn't need batteries.  On the downside, nearly every mount for it will sit too high on the FAL.

Another ACOG, the 3x30mm, has the same pluses and minues, but has a narrower field of view.  On the upshot, it's lighter and costs a lot less.

Another Trijicon I'm looking at is the 1.25-4x Accupoint.  Again, it has a daylight-visible reticle, and requires no batteries.  On 1.25x, it's better at very close ranges than the three scopes above.  I'ts very affordable as well.  On the downside, the reticle lacks any ranging capability whatsoever, and it maybe isn't as durable as a military grade optic.

I keep going back and forth on this.  I know if I just pick something I could be happy with most of these; I just want to get the most bang for my buck, so to speak.  I kind of like the simplicity and soldier-proof ruggedity of the ACOG line, but I'm mainly worried about mounting options that'll work on the FAL.  I *think* DSA makes a Para scope mount that allows you to mount the ACOG right to it now, but I'm not sure.

Thoughts?

ACOG with purpose mount for it from DSA Arms.

I will say that my Accupoint is very durable though.

I'm looking at putting a Millett DMS on mine.

I've held off responding to this one as I was giving it much consideration.

    My top suggestion is for:
    The Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4x24.
Reason being is that optics with just a 1x actually makes the target look a bit farther away... this one, at 1.25 corrects that and makes it actually useable at the lower settings.  Then you have the ability to run up to 4x, in case you need to reach out there.
I like the german style, and I think that would be ideal for a short range application, and totally useable at any range you are engaging with a 4x setting farther out.
This Burris was my first choice...

But after thinking about it... I like the Trijicon's simplicity and speed... and no batteries.  The Trijicon wins.

Yeah, I've been giving the Accupoint a serious second look.  The really nice thing about it is the combination of Tritium and fiber optics means that the illumination is visible in full daylight.  Of the various battery-powered illuminated scopes, only the Schmidt & Bender Short Dot (MSRP over $2,000) can make a similar boast (as far as I know).

    Hey NC,

usp_fan coming over from THR.  Two suggestions, both are in the running for an AR I'm putting together right now.  The Millet DMS-1 is a bargain for the versitility.  The accupoint you are looking at is good, but a better one was just released at the SHOT show.  Trijicon just showed a new Accupoint which is closer to true 1x and zooms to 4x, has the option of a green aiming point, and has greater eye relief than the current accupoint.  The pricing is slightly higher, but the features are very much improved.

I have the ACOG, and I like it.  Granted I haven't gotten to use it that much, but still.  If it had a variable mag function, it would be great.
I know DSA has a regular FAL, non Para folding, top cover that is cut so you can lower the ACOG by probably close to 1/2in.  It looks like you might even be able to use the iron sights through the little hole at the bottom too.  I don't remember ever seeing one for a para though.  Probably since they have the recoil spring up there since it is not in the stock now.
I've looked at the acupoint too, but it always seemed kink of spartan before now.  I might have to take another look.
I've also looked at the Luep but since I already have the ACOG, I haven't seen the compelling need to try to switch especially since you would then have to worry about batteries.
Seems like IOR or US Optics or Nightforce might also be options, course they are pretty expensive and still have the battery issue.  Price might be around the same as an ACOG though depending on options and where you get it.
So, to complete my ramblings, unless you can try them all, I don't think you will miss anything with the ACOG, as long as you don't expect to be super fast really close in.  I have heard that some have done find close with training thought so I guess it is possible.

A FAL is on the short list.  I've seen the DSA mount and is a top notch piece of kit.
