Opinions on Rifle Slings?
« on: March 25, 2017, 08:56:07 pm »
Now that my AR-15 (aka "Kindness") is finally complete and in-spec, I figure I should start kitting it out. I already have a light (Streamlight Pro-Tac RM 2 on a MagPul MLOK Cantilever Mount) and I'll add a red dot once I learn to shoot with irons, probably a SIG Romeo4. The rifle also needs a sling (every rifle needs a sling!), but I'm clueless when it comes to slings.

I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a basic adjustable two-point sling. I'm planning on attaching it directly to the sling loops under the gas block and on the buttstock, no QD mounts or paraclips or anything like that. I figure I won't be running any high-speed-low-drag missions in, on, or around vehicles or aircraft, so I won't need to ditch the rifle in a hurry, so quick-detach mounts aren't necessary.

I was thinking maybe a MagPul MS1, but I'm curious as to what my other options might be. My only requirements are a) that it's easily adjustable but at the same time won't adjust on me when I don't want it to, and b) I can get it in OD or Ranger Green so it matches the rifle's furniture (I'm weird like that). Also, would a padded sling be necessary? I haven't weighed the rifle, but I figure it probably weighs somewhere between 7 to 7.5 lbs as it's currently configured, and that will probably increase to 7.5-8 lbs once I add the optic.

As always, thanks in advance.

I really like this one. We run them on our SWAT rifles. They quickly adjust and are wide enough not to cut into you too badly even after hours with the weapon hanging off your front.

Otherwise I'd just get some 1 1/2" or 2" strap and some plastic slides and make your own. I've done that on half my long guns.

Bumping this one up. I think I'm going to go with a MagPul MS1 in Ranger Green, but I have a new question:

    QD, or not QD?

Kindness has an integral QD mount on her buttstock and another on her receiver endplate, and I bought an M-LOK QD mount to add to the handguard (and I think I've found a trick to properly tension all my M-LOK mounts), but having thought it over, I'm not sure I really need QD capability on my sling. I don't see myself needing to ditch my rifle in a hurry for any reason: I won't be going on vehicle patrols or fast-roping out of helicopters or anything like that. Kindness has a standard sling loop on the front sight base and at least 1 (I think 2) sling loops on the buttstock.

Also, should I spring the extra $$$ for a padded sling or just stick with a regular sling? I haven't weighed Kindness at all, but I figure she'll probably weigh in at about 8-8.5 lbs with the light, optic, and full 30-round magazine.

I'm a fan of the QD mounts if for nothing but taking the sling off I don't really see them as a way to ditch the rifle. I would skip the padding myself but I'm used to just nylon webbing slings on all my rifles and shotguns and have found that the padding just adds bulk and dose not make much difference in comfort

IllinoisThere’s a story about a turtle and a scorpion. Scorpion is stranded on a river bank. Turtle sees this and asks Scorpion to get on his back and he’ll take him across the river. Scorpion gets on Turtle’s back and they go into the river. When they’re about halfway across, Scorpion stings Turtle. As Turtle is sinking, knowing they’re both going to die, he asks Scorpion "Why did you sting me, we’re both going to die?" and Scorpion says "It’s not my fault; it’s what I am."
