Nice New Flashlights.
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:46:12 am »
Posted this in the SHTF section too.  But thought it may be helpful here also.

So I have been a surefire snob for about 6 years now.  I use a light everyday at work.  I work on ocean going ships.  I have come to love my all of my surefires.  My Sister, bless her heart.  Decided to get me a couple new flash lights for Christmas (Not Surefire).  I finally decided to take em out of the package, and check em out.  WHOA DANG!!!  About twice the size of a G2, but I am absolutely IMPRESSED with these lights.  She got em at Sams Club.  machined aluminum, 150 Lumen, LED, tail cap switch, knurled housing.  Just a NICE light!!!  And considering they only cost $28.00 for a package of two, I thought I'd pass it on.

Not sure how well they'll hold up to the sort of abuse I put my lights through.  I'll keep you posted though.  I go back over seas next week, so the torture test will begin.  Having said that though.  I've had several replacement tail caps and bezels sent to me from surefire.  No light is the do all end all.  But for $28.00 a pair, it's looking pretty good to me.

I, too, am a Surefire snob. I've found few jobs Surefire can't do, and few other lights that can do everything a Surefire does. I keep one in my flight suit, one in the truck, and one next to the gun beside my bed.

I abuse the living s*** out of my 6P and it keeps on running.  I've killed more than a few flashlights before this one.

I've got two Surefires, and I love them.
A G2, simple black plastic.  This stays in my truck.   It is bright enough I can actually Spotlight with it.  Not that I spotlight... ahem... because that would be wrong.
A Defender is what I used at Night Shoots, or when I "Hear Something" at night.

A couple other lights I really like and use often is a couple Streamlight Pen Lights... one uses two AAA batteries and the other uses one AAA battery... good light output, and they are great for when I need a light like when the bed room light is off and I'm coming to bed late and I need to see which of my kids is in bed snuggled with Mom and if I have room or when I am getting up in the morning and she's asleep and I dont want to wake her.   Or reading in bed.  Lots of little things.
Then there is my hat light...

I kid you not - this is the single most used light I have.  I love this thing.   I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark... and there are places at work where it's dark.   I often just leave this clipped to my hat.  Yes, it's kinda geeky... but it's the most handiest danged thing ever made.   It weights nothing and I can't even tell it's clipped on.  But when I need it - it's hands free, and wow - it's always shining right where I need it... unlike the "Here, hold the light for me" routine.  Anytime I need a light for mundane tasks - this is usually it if I am wearing a hat.  Which I usually am if I am out of the house.
Surefire doesn't make a hat light like this... and if they did - I'd get it.  But this cheap little thing, for 12 bucks, gets it done.   If they can improve on it - I'm all over it.

I may have to pick up a surefire with an IR filter for my NVD I plan on getting.  At the same time, I love my maglites. I've got two 3 watt LED mag lights that work well enough that I can't justify spending an extra thirty dollars on a surefire.

Honestly, for night vision work, in my experience, surefires are way too bright anyway. I haven't used their IR filters, but I have a blue filter on my G2, and its still super bright through the NVGs.

Since NVG's primarily pick up IR, and the bottom end of the visual spectrum (red), red and amber lights are the brightest, and blues and greens are much friendlier through the NVGs since they're further from IR.  They're all visible and provide HUGE illumination, but a single red Christmas light will look like a 100w light bulb through the goggles, while a blue or green one will look like a slightly brighter Christmas light. Red and white lights will cause higher-end goggles to "gain down" or dim the image.

I've seen IR chem lights through NVGs and they're pretty bright. Remote controls are like strobe lights. I don't know if an IR flashlight would be as freakin bright as my blue surefire, but I'd look for some lower power lights or use half-dead batteries in your surefire for use with NVG's.
