Title: Looking for gift suggestions
Post by: booksmart on August 04, 2012, 02:00:48 pm
My stepfather recently bought himself a Saiga rifle (unconverted... so far ;) ), with two 20 shot mags.

His birthday's coming up, and I'm looking for suggestions for some other accessories I can get him.

Stock conversion (http://www.amazon.com/Shotgun-Tactical-Position-Collapsible-Pistol/dp/B005CW57ZY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344105001&sr=8-1&keywords=saiga+accessories) + optics mount (http://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Shotgun-7-62x39-Weaver-Picatinny-Scope-Sight/dp/B004EYG3MW/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1344105001&sr=8-8&keywords=saiga+accessories)?

Doesn't Sarge have his Saiga 12 set up with one of those?

Why yes I do and what fits the shotgun will fit the rifle. Here is where I bought mine:

A case of ammo is always a great gift.

Is there any difference in quality between Tapco and UAG?

I know nothing about UAG but TAPCO has always been really good stuff so far

I've handled both products and really dont see much of a difference between the two.

Zombie thread resurrection...

So, I got him the UAG optics mount (he mentioned in conversation that he'd rather keep it as a rifle stock instead of pistol grip).

Sooo... optics suggestions?  His eyesight isn't stellar (multifocal glasses), and the area he's most likely to use it in is heavily wooded.

I'm thinking low magnification, wide field of vision? And under $200... Any suggestions?

Reflex style sight. They work dandy for just about anything in normal shotgun range

ZOMG... the thread that wouldn't die!!

Okay... so gave him the mount for Christmas... and it doesn't fit properly.

With the screw all the way in, and the QD lever flattened to it's "On" position, the UTG mount slides right off.

Should he take it to a 'smith, see if he can shim it, or should I just get him a different mount?

The heck...that's odd  :hmm     Which UTG mount is it?

http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MNT-978&status=&mtrack=2m2 (http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MNT-978&status=&mtrack=2m2)

Or

http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MTU016&status=&mtrack=2m2 (http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MTU016&status=&mtrack=2m2)
????

  I have used:
http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MNT-973&status=&mtrack=2m2 (http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=mount&level1=AK&level2=Receiver_Mount&itemno=MNT-973&status=&mtrack=2m2)
Which is identical to the first except Allen-bolt VS clamp-down lever.  On both I have had to really crank down to engage the rails.

My advice would be to spring for a BP-02 from Kalinka or Primary Arms, and then resell the UTG on a forum or something. Not alot but $25 shipped to someone will be better than tossing it.

And while SOME...people have shimmed them, I personally wouldn't want to shim between the mount and rifle myself.....

My advice would be to toss the UTG mount in a dumpster, then set the dumpster on fire. That, or sell it to an Airsofter.

It's the 978, Grant. Thanks for the info...

I was looking at the RS Regulated mounts...

RSR is 100% good to go.

If you're going to use a red dot? RSR is definately the way to go.   At the moment, if you're going to put on a regular scope? Midwest Industries Picatinny rail.     Both options are costly, but almost 100% RTZ and actualyl have good resale value.

*frustrated sigh* So, I ordered the 5th Gen UTG (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F0IA1K/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00) through Amazon, and had it shipped directly to my stepfather.

And it doesn't fit. It's a little tighter than the #978, but it also slides off. So, I'm going to arrange for him to ship it back.

But at this point I'm curious as to the possibility the siderail on his Saiga isn't sized correctly.  He has also made the comment that the only mags he's been able to get to fit well are from Centerfire Systems.

I'm also tempted to just do this: http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Precision-Machined-Combat-Steel/dp/B002GO5WG0/ref=sr_1_25?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1358743225&sr=1-25&keywords=Saiga+scope+mount (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Precision-Machined-Combat-Steel/dp/B002GO5WG0/ref=sr_1_25?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1358743225&sr=1-25&keywords=Saiga+scope+mount)

Another possibility: UTG is crap. Stop ordering UTG crap and your problem might vanish.

This. I wouldnt take UTG junk for free much less pay for it.

Its airsoft s___ that is marketed to the windowlickers in the firearms world, just like CAA junk. The kind of guys who will buy a $1k rifle and top it with a $30 scope and wonder why they have troubles a plenty.Yeah you can get it for cheap but cheap s___ is still s___.

Youve purchased two mounts from UTG so far. How much would that have gotten you towards one quality mount?

Fair point. $60 - about half of which I should be able to get back ( the first was probably purchased too long ago to return).

Hey at least you are ahead of several of my friends. They keep buying cheap scopes or reddots in an effort to "save money" and then when they break they keep buying more...to the point where many of them have far surpassed the point of buying one quality scope or Aimpoint.

Yeah I try to avoid talking guns with them in an effort to avoid an aneurism.

Along those lines, any good glass under $200 that I can suggest to him?

For myself, I'm looking at the Nikon P-300, but the variety of loads for 300 BLK I think may actually be working against me....

What are his needs? Is he looking for a no magnification red dot sight or a low power scope? There are probably some decent 1-4x scopes in your price range

He's (still) never shot the rifle. He bought it in case of "needing to deal with two legged varmints in case SHTF".

Given that he's in the upper half of his 60's (and wearing bifocals), I was thinking along the lines of a 1-4x magnification illuminated mildot - he's former Army - with 3-4" of eye relief.  They live in the north Georgia mountains (heavily wooded), so shots past 100-150 yards would be rare (he won't be using it for hunting, for instance - Mom would divorce him on the spot).

Just sold my Saiga but I loved the set up I had. The Tapco railed forend and M4 style stock worked great. I never put optics on my shotguns due to the shorter ranges.

Verdict: that did the trick, plus a little.

Screwed down the retention screw a little, slid on the mount, flipped QD switch... and picked up rifle by the mount, held it vertically, shook it a little: not even a rattle.

Very solid mount, very tight.

Tromix conversion kit. We do it exclusively for Saiga conversions because it works and its relatively easy.
