Insight ISM-V
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:46:19 pm »
The Insight ISM-V. This is a super tough Red Dot type sight with a built in visible laser. It's funky looking.  But has a long 1500+ hour battery life thanks to the use of the CR 123 3 volt battery. Tight 2 MOA dot for accuracy. The laser is a class 3a laser - so don't shine it in anyone eyes... because it will damage them.  It snaps onto standard mil-spec rails and co-witnesses perfectly with a fixed front sight post. This is a very cool aiming system. Very hard core.  Like I said before, it is funky looking at first, but it grows on you. It's a little spendy, but it looks to be worth it. I tried it out on a Rock River... full on awesome. I love it. I want one. If you want one, call me soon. We've only go 2 left. $899. Which is a great price. We beat Optics Planet by a huge margin on that price.

Yes, it's ugly and alien looking.  But it gets better looking the more I look at it.
If you guys want to buy me something my my birthday, my precious... I'll take one of these.

One more thing.  This is ideal if you have an AR with a fixed front sight.  It co-witnesses perfectly with the iron and if the battery dies, or the unit fails, it can be used as a big ghost ring sight.  Not so good on my SIG, as it's already taller at the rail and I don't need a co-witness.  But for an AR - this is sweet.

Dr. Hill, the Insight looks cool,  O0 will it co-witness with Iron sights?

Does it Co-Witness with the Irons?  Indeed - it does so perfectly.
I shot the sight today, on a new Charles Daly AR-15.  The range is covered in snow, with a snow covered mountain in the back ground - and it was very bright out.  The sight was crystal clear and the little 2MOA dot was still very easy to see.
Accuracy with the sight - having just bolted it straight on and not even zeroing - I was easily able to repeatedly hit my target at 400 yards offhand.  The sight works.   It's ugly looking... but it functioned flawlessly.
I didn't bother with the Laser, due to light conditions... but it;s there.
The laser also has a remote pressure switch you can attach (comes with the unit and they don't soak you another 40 bucks) and mount on the weapon wherever you like to activate the laser... that's a nice touch.
This optic is full of win.   For a combat type red dot - I'm giving it a 9 out of 10.   Flip Up Covers would have been nicer and could have made it a 10-10, but instead it comes with a big Glove type cover.   Simple and it works, but some decent flip ups. would have been ideal for a sight of this type.

Do the DoT and Laser adjust together?  (IE when it's zero'd in with the DoT is the Laser zero'd in as well, or do they adjust seperatly?)

I have played with this sight, though it was the SOCCOM version with IR and a few years ago. Absolutely baddass! I want one now that they are available in quantity.

That unit with an IR laser would be sooooo cool.

Seperate.  But that's cool.  Because the dot and the laser are in two different places, you can zero the laser for close range and the dot for long range work.

James, you are absolutely correct - the ISM-V is full on badassness.   I would rather the laser be green... but a class 3 is certain powerful enough to scorch one's eyeballs.   I want one too.

The one question I have is about the value.  Is this optic worth the price?  This is an expensive optic, let's be honest.  For this price you could get anything else on the market and have change left over save for a couple specific optics, such as the ACOG.  Off the cuff, I'd say no.  It's too much.  But having used it today, in the freezing cold and high winds and bright light in white conditions...  and it worked flawlessly with crystal clarity.    I even turned off the sight and used the iron through it.  It worked.  Targets to 200 and 300 yards were easily hit.  Because of that - YES.  It's worth it.
