Drag Bag
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:02:36 pm »
Last time I was at FBMG I picked up one of their sniper Drag Bags.
http://www.fbmginc.com/Condor-Sniper-Drag-Bag_p_27-139.html
This one has all the bells and whistles.  I like drag bags, because they make great rifle cases, have good padding, protect the weapon, and have some storage that regular soft cases don't have.
But this one is crazy.  I have no idea what all the different pockets and compartments are for.  It's got straps in the pockets for all kinds of stuff.  Ammo pouches, bino pouch, my Dope Book... and room for more stuff.
I like it.

Dumb question maybe, but why a drag bag instead of a backpack?  If a drag bag is what I think it is (the closest I've come to it is seeing a documentary about Army sniper school), what does it do for you that a backpack doesn't?  Not being a smart aleck, I just want to know.  Do they last very long if they're getting dragged long distances?

Drag bags are constructed out of ballistic grade material with massive reinforcement (parachute webbing on the dragged side, french seamed triple stitching, etc).  They work better than a backpack for several reasons - 1) they do not stick up in the air to give away your position while crawling 2) they do not get stuck to every vine and branch in the forest or jungle (if you have worn any gear while moving through brush, you will know what I mean), 3) if crawling, your ghillie suit is unbelievably hot - something on your back just adds to the heat 4) it is easier to access gear from your drag-bag than a back pack (less noise, less movement, etc) and 5) if you need to bolt, extract your weapon, ditch the bag,  and exfil the area hastily (aka: Run like hell).

They can also make a pretty handy ground cover to shoot from the prone position.  ;)

The log pockets are for rolled up cam net and the other for the poles. It makes up your own improvised hide site. The slant pocket on the main pouch is generally used for your data book and range cards and the big pocket for your tripod mounted binos or a small spotting scope.
You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again. -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. - Ayn Rand

"I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." -Robert Heinlein.

One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws, but conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. –– Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Ah... camo net!
I never bring that with me because it's always a pain in the arse to deal with.  That's a nice feature.
Binos and data book are already in there.

I took mine out early this morning...

I should have got one a long time ago.  It's easily the most actually useful bit of kit I've got now.

HidewithPride, I've done the whole trying to be quiet in the woods with an ALCE pack, and you're right, it ain't easy. Problem is, I can't think of another time I'll need to be real sneaky again while hauling a rifle, all my tactical gear, and the kitchen sink.

Missed this one for a while, it looks like. Yeah, I had the pleasure of going through AF Survival School out near Spokane, WA. We played Army in the mountains for about 5 days, and about half of it was sneaky evasion tactics. Only got caught once, cuz the stupid butterbar leading my group (ahem...yours truly) decided to cross a bridge, which apparently isn't very sneaky.
