AR handguards
« on: February 08, 2020, 06:17:40 pm »
Mrs. has been shooting her rifles (and mine) for a few years now, and has never really felt 100% comfortable. The main trouble is the handguard---none are wide enough.
She doesn't feel comfortable if her fingers curve around to follow smaller handguards---she feels that her grip is better if fingers are more in a U shape.

We have A4 style, and a variety of keylock rails; but none are just right. She wants to get a new rifle, with everything just right, but it is difficult to find diameters listed on manufacturer's websites.

What are the beefiest rail type handguards you guys know about? Measurements would be appreciated if you know them.

I know this is not what you asked about, but has she tried a more traditionally shaped hand guard.  IE. a triangular shaped AR hand guard, or a Magpul?  The Magpul is more "U" shaped, or oblong rather than round.  More like a bolt action.  It is narrower, but also taller compared to many tube type hand guards.  https://magpul.com/catalog/product/view/id/5962/s/moeslhandguard-carbine-length-ar15-m4/category/48/?mp_global_color=118

I think most tube type hand guards are around 2 inches.

This one is one I might be interested in, but it is too expensive for my current AR's.  I do not like the round hand guards much, and hate the rail on all four sides that turn the hand guard into a cheese grater.

I have found with Brownells I had to dig in the Q&A to find diameters on hand guards.  This one is 2.6" wide and 2.7" tall.

Not railed, but I'd suggest Magpul rifle length handguards or the old school A1 triangular style.

You might also try adding on some rail covers to your other ones, that could make them wider.

Ksuguy---I'll try the covers...........I think I have some somewhere

Mikee5star--I keep forgetting about Brownell's (and Midway). This one is expensive as &@#%$, but it is her money, and if it works----good.

I think Academy has a small selection of Magpul accessories, as well as one of the local gun pushers---I'll drag her there next week to put hers paws on different types

I have two rifles that I just put aluminum tubes on.  Bought aluminum with ID a thou or two under the size of a barrel nut press fit them on.  Gives you about a 2" handguard as has been mentioned.  I don't think you can get much bigger.
