The CZ-82
« on: September 08, 2009, 12:36:27 am »
Thinking about picking up two or three of these little guns.  J&G has them for $199 if you buy two or more.  A nice bonus is that I can take a half-day trip up to Prescott to pick them up.

Comments on the CZ-82?

I've got one,  nice and compact and decently powerful.   It would make a good carry gun, a little wide and heavy though.    I did find it slightly uncomfortable to shoot.  It has snappy recoil and it does sting your palms just a little bit.

My younger brother has one.  I like it a lot.   In fact, I can't think of ANY other gun I'd choose over it for $200, provided it was in good condition.

It's no .45, but it's hard to argue with 12+1 rounds of 9x18.  The hottest stuff may be considered by some to be comparable to .38 special, depending on whether you subscribe to the light/fast (energy) theory, or the slow/heavy (momentum) theory.  I once "babysat" my brother's CZ82 for about a month, and just for a change, I experimented with it as my primary.  I never felt under-armed.

It has a truly sweet double action trigger pull, which was surprising for a $200ish gun.  I don't know if this is normal, or if he just has a particularly excellent example.  Of course you can do cocked and locked if you want.

Sights are minimal, but it's a 200 dollar gun, so whatever.  It's a little snappy, but I've never been the recoil sensitive type.  I rather enjoy it.  Every time I've ever accompanied him to the range, it has been supremely reliable.  It ejects spent casings upwards of 30 feet.

If I had $400 to blow, and was in your area, I'd probably be racing you to the gun store to snatch up the deal.

Cabela's had a sale on CZ-82's a couple of weeks ago.  They had them for $149.99 with 2 mags and a leather holster.  The Cabela's store in Lehi went through about 20 of them in a couple of days.  I got there first and picked through them for the nicest one.  It's my second CZ-82.

Just stopped off at J&G after work.

The CZ-82 I saw was pretty rough looking. Maybe 60% on the finish. I didn't actually handle it, so I can't say how the function was - probably fine.

If I were getting one, the first thing I'd do would be to give it some Moly-Resin or send it off to Gundoc for refinishing.

The pic from J&G's website looks a little better than the sample I was examining:

Condition varies pretty widely.  The one I have is practically brand new and I don't think it had been fired before I got it.   I've seen others that were pretty beat up.

Is there a reason that thing looks so Makarov-ish?

Is it a straight up, improved PM clone?

The Makarov is itself a Walther PP clone. The CZ-82 has some distinct similarities to both, and some important differences. They all are straight blowback mechanisms with a coaxial (wrapped around the barrel) recoil spring, and slides that remove to the rear after pulling down the trigger guard (which retract the slide stop).

The CZ-82 is different in that it uses a double stack magazine (there were some doublestack Makarovs but they're not so common), a push button magazine release instead of a heel latch (some PP/PPKs use a button and some a heel latch), a frame mounted safety without decocker, and an external slide stop. The CZ is also unusual for a combloc gun in that it uses polygonal rifling.

The only one I have any real experience with is the Makarov, so if anyone sees a mistake or omission please let me know.

These things seem really wide compared to Maks.
But not compared to other double stack self-loading pistols.

Pros - double stack 12 round magazine
good double action trigger, great single action
polygonal rifling supposedly improves velocity, easiser to clean
nice sized grips, not too small, not too large
Gotten 2ea from SOG, police holsters, break top, extra mag and case
            it's just neat!

Cons - loading the double stack ((#^^$))&^$%%*%#&)(*()$*&$*&$mag by hand.

How easy is 9x18 mm PM found in the states?  Last gunshow I remember seeing both 7.62x25 and 5.54x39 and of course 7.62x54R and 7.62x39 but no 9x18.

You won't find 9x18 at WalMart, but it should be available at most reasonably stocked gun shops and any gunshow should have somebody with it.

J&G, AIM, SOG, Classic, just about all the online vendors carry 9X18, if you get privi or S&B it's boxer primed reloadable brass.  Silver Bear is steel cased, Blazer is aluminum, so is Wolf unless you get the gold then it's about the same as privi. ;)

Silver Bear 9x18 looks like candy.  It's all I can do to keep from eating the whole mag like a Pez dispencer.

Cabela's in Lehi carries it.  Almost always has S&B in stock and sometimes Silver Bear.  They also sometimes have the Hornaday Custom with the XTP hollow point.
Seems like just 2 or 3 years ago I was getting Wolf for less than $9.00 per box, now the stuff costs more than 9x19 at most places.

Check with: http://www.familyfirearmsandfinishes.com/   He had some very nice, pick of the litter, types.  Leather original holster, 2 mags, lanyard, cleaning rod, one mag pouch--about $235.  He also has low prices on 9X18 ammo and other ammo.

    Take a look at http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Czech_CZ-82_9x18_Pistol.html

The Aim Surplus folks have a reputation for precisely stating their guns' conditions and they have a very nice one pictured for $219.95 with two mags and a holster. They have always been glad to talk to me about their guns and tend to be very nice folks who go for customer satisfaction. This is a C&R pistol as well.

CZ 82 as Curious and Relic???
That guy who put these on C&R list must have sence of humor, because they're not any of it.
BTW Czech army still use them. Here's the pic from the Czech contingent in Afghanistan. (I heard that they're gonna be replaced by Glocks soon)

For the price,  if you really like Maks,  It would be really easy to justify some serious gunsmithing along the lines of a good carry melt.
