CMP South Store
« on: September 01, 2016, 09:45:00 am »
Decided to stop at the CMP store on the way to Dragoncon.  Not nearly as much stuff as there was when I was last here in 2010.  They had a few dozen drill rifles, both 1903s and M1s.  As for Garands, they had a couple dozen service grades, some Winchester specials, and a dozen or so National Match or M1Cs for crazy money.  They limit you to one purchase at a time now.

There was a bit of a rush at 8 am as the collectors that are here every week hunted for rare stuff. I snagged a nice Service grade with very low TE of about 2 and 0 ME.  Also came with a brand new CMP stock.  It actually looked pretty close to a special grade gun.

They are mostly only selling commercial ammo now too.  There was a little Greek stuff left, but you can buy decent commercial for the same price.

This era is winding down.  I need to get on it and order a service grade HRA or two to go with my Winnies.

Also prices are higher.  However, they do ship for free now and give you a gun case which partially offsets that.

Yep.  I certainly was not around for the barrels full of Lugers, but I remember right before Obama was elected, and a bit after...  K98s, M48s, Mosins of every flavor, Swiss K31s, and whatever the Steyr rifle is...  All of them for $200 or less, and the Mosins for as low as ~$50 through various distributors.  Of course, this was when I had only just turned 18, and while I had money, I figured I would never want an 'old' rifle...   :banghead

On the other hand,  AR stuff is much easier to find with a lot more variety and cheaper now.

Yeah, but now I have to pay state sales tax on purchases, which counteracts the free shipping by a good bit.

Yeah kind of sucks if you are in Alabama and have to pay that. On the other hand, you don't need to drive twelve hours to visit the store.

Glad I got mine when I did.   Definitely be a time when gun people look back and say "That was so cool when....."
