Hollow Point use in Suppressors
« on: January 09, 2019, 10:56:35 pm »
I had a nice conversation with a gentleman in AAC's repair department today.  My suppressor had an incident of a Hornady XTP fragmenting inside the can, and destroying two baffles.   I was advised that this is the leading cause of baffle strikes in pistol suppressors, and it is recommended to not use HP ammunition in them.  Odd... This is the first I have ever heard of that.

Has anyone else here had a similar experience, or received similar advice?

I am certainly not an expert and would suggest bowing to the rep you spoke to, but I have never had any problem firing any type of hollow points in a standard baffle suppressor. As is made obvious by what happened to you, results may very.

I never had a problem either - until I did.  I suppose I could try switching to flat nose fmj bullets.

I have heard that its not a good idea to use the pre-fragmented rounds in a .22LR with a suppressor but this is the first I have heard about not using hollow point ammo in a center fire gun with one.   :hmm   I'm guessing that the majority of suppressors used in civilian applications are running hollow points almost exclusively outside of low cost practice ammo.

I've heard that shooting hollowpoints through a wet can, especially if you're using something like vasaline or wire-pulling gel, or though a can that uses wipes is almost guaranteed to result in baffle strikes (especially if you're running wipes), but never heard of it happening in a dry can before.
