Best .22 pistol to suppress?
« on: June 22, 2016, 02:40:08 pm »
I am talking about the host, not the can, but since it is NFA-specific, I put it here rather than in 'Handguns.'

I am looking down the road to future NFA purchases, and a .22 pistol with suppressor is on the short list.  Does anyone here have a recommendation as to which pistol host might be 'best,' or 'most ideal' to suppress?  An integrally suppressed Ruger MkII intrigues me, but does limit one to a single host for the can.

I just bought a .22 can, have to wait a while for it though. I have a Browning Buckmark that I bought a threaded barrel for. The barrel actually is being delivered today. Should be a good one.
I've been watching a fair amount of videos online, and it seems like a lot of people use the Ruger 22/45. I can update when the can comes so I can see how the pistol sounds. I really like the Buckmark as a whole. Great shooting pistol.

I was thinking about getting either the S&W Victory, since you can get it with a threaded barrel, or the 22/45, but decided to save money and the bought the barrel for the Buckmark.

The easiest way to go would be a Ruger MkIII or 22/45 that comes with a threaded barrel. They run just fine suppressed, they're well built, and well supported.

I played with a Browning 1911-22 yesterday though, and I think it would be far and away the coolest option. Spendy for a .22 though.

I have been carrying an S&W M&P .22 compact while walking the dogs around the property. I bought it with a threaded barrel specifically so I could put a can on it. I have submitted the paperwork to the 'thugs' for a SilencerCo Sparrow.

I am really impressed with the S&W .22 compact. It is incredibly accurate and utterly reliable using CCI Mini Mags or the Federal equivalent.

I just ordered some subsonic CCI and start shooting that to see how they perform while I wait for the ATF to get around to me.

My Buckmark is the most reliable .22 anything I've ever had anything to do with.  I haven't put a suppressor on it, but it would be the first on my list.

Thanks. :) I've had it for somewhere between 15-20 years. Thousands of rounds through it. Not sure how many. Recently replaced the firing pin, recoil spring, and extractor. Probably didn't need to replace the last two parts, but they were cheap, and it was easy. It is a very reliable gun. Should be a fun suppressed piece.

I have a threaded Buckmark and it is excellent. My wife likes the Ruger 22/45 but the grip angle does not work for me. The only downside to the Buckmark is the dissasembly.  When you take it all the way apart you must remove a screw first.  The Buckmark is the most accurate in my hand, but the M&P is my favorite. It is accurate enough, functions well, and is the easiest of the three to maintain.

Of all the .22 pistols I have tried to suppress (Buckmark, S&W 422, GSG 1911, Mosquito, P22) the Buckmark has been the most reliable and provided the best level of suppression.  My Buckmark has a 4" Tactical Solutions Trail Lite barrel and the barrel length ensures that pretty much all .22 ammo will be subsonic.  My suppressor is at least 11 years old but still does a pretty good job.  I've considered the Ruger MK line of handguns, but the big drawback to them is that the "firearm" part is the upper barreled receiver and that means if you want to buy a new/different barrel you will have to go through a FFL to get it.  Also the Buckmark is aluminum and is very light, most of the Ruger MK guns are steel.  That's my take.

I like my 22/45. The biggest thing with the Rugers is to buy one with a threaded barrel, as opposed to buying any old Ruger Mk-X series and planning to install a TB. The upper is the "gun part," so you'd have to buy another "gun."

It's got a huge aftermarket, so mods are easy. Mine is awesome with my Silencerco 22Sparrow, Docter sight, and Volquartsen (sp?) trigger kit. I use it for teaching, in addition to amusement. Great for inexperienced shooters because it's quiet, no recoil, light trigger (good trigger control is less critical), and a red dot. It's a point-click-interface, which helps build confidence and makes learning shooting fun. After some big smiles, I remove the suppressor, then move on to bigger, louder, more technically demanding handguns once the student has been "bitten by the shooting bug."
The only problem is my wife tries to monopolize it every time she shoots it. I only get trigger time when I go to the range alone.

Another +1 for the Buckmark with Tactical Solutions barrel.  I love mine.

More so than the integrally suppressed Ruger MkII?

If you already have a .22 suppressor, yes.  If you do not and have no plans to shoot any other .22 hosts (rifle, pistol, etc), then an integral Ruger Mk II or III would be fine.
