VW Passat Temp sensor getting blown off of engine
« on: September 21, 2012, 05:05:27 pm »
I have an interesting issue. I have a 99 VW Passat with the 1.8 Turbo. Had the low fluid light come on, filled it up and heard water running out the back of the motor. I could see the water running out, but it stopped when I pushed in a sensor. Some google-fu later I found out I was missing a clip. New clip and o-ring later I was feeling pretty proud of myself, when the warning light came back on. Checking, sure enough the bottle was almost empty and water was coming out of the same spot. There were a few shards of the clip left that fell out when I reached in to feel if it was still there.

What would cause that type of pressure in the coolant system? I don't think it is a head gasket issue due to a lack of beautiful white smoke, and no loss in power.

I replaced the clip (again) and had tried babying the car (under 2k RPM) and it has worked for over a week, this clip is broken, but the shards are holding the sensor in place... so my water has stayed full, but the cold season is rapidly approaching, and I have to put the unholy G12 back into it before it freezes.

Any ideas?

I can think of 3 things that would cause that, none of them are good. One would be the mentioned head gasket, the other could be a cracked intake manifold, the third could be a leaky air to water intercooler. The white smoke doesnt always happen, check your oil for the milkshake look of death. You can check the intercooler by pulling off the hose leading from the intercooler to the intake and seeing if you have moisture. One thing to be aware of is just because something has a leak under pressure does not mean that it will be leaking all the time too. This is especially true when you are dealing with rubber hoses.

Shouldn't the radiator cap (or equivalent) be bleeding off pressure before that point? What's the level in the overflow tank look like?

While the sensor is pinned in place by the remnants of the clip the water (it's all water now) level stays pretty steady. The turbo in this case has its own intercooler, not connected to the antifreeze system at all, I think.

The last time I got to really like one of my vehicles, I thought, yeah I like this thing, I should put some money into fixing it up... seconds later I blew my headgasket and trailed white smoke back to town. That was the deathblow for the isuzu, I'd hate to lose the VW.

And I'm back... no sign of water or contaminants on the oil (it's time for a change, but no milkiness or glitter) and the level doesn't seem high like something else has been introduced and not mixed.

Jesse could be right on then, might be having the high pressure due to the radiator cap not venting right, and the high temps could be a water pump issue, as far as where the coolant is going.... Put a big piece of cardboard under it and let it sit, if its not leaking then let it idle and check or put it nuetral, rev it and check

I had a turbo Supra with a similar problem, turned out it was the head gasket allowing hot gases to leak into the coolant system, but not allowing water to leak into the oil system or exhaust.  It did lift the radiator cap on mine.  I'd try replacing your radiator cap (cheap) and see what happens.

Try replacing the pressure cap first.  It is the cheapest of the possible causes.
