Title: WeTheArmed.com major upgrade - 11/25/2011, 04:00 MST
Post by: Thernlund on November 24, 2011, 01:36:02 pm
Tomorrow at 4:00am Mountain Standard Time, WeTheArmed will undergo a major upgrade.  We will...

a)  Upgrade WeTheArmed.com to SMF 2.0.1.
b)  Move the entire site off our current shared host and onto a dedicated server.

This upgrade will provide us with more functionality, flexibility and reliability.

During this time, WeTheArmed.com will be taken offline and will not be accessible.  We expect this upgrade to last no more than 4 hours.

However, because we are moving to a dedicated server, the IP address of the site will be changing.

When we finish the upgrade and move, we will then change the DNS to point to the new site.  As such, WeTheArmed will come online as DNS propagates.  In most of the U.S. this process shouldn't take very long; 20 minutes to an hour at the outside.  However, although extremely uncommon, this process can take up to 8 hours depending on how your ISP handles DNS.

So we should be done by 8am, and be back online worldwide by noon at the latest (Mountain Standard Time).  With all your Black Friday shopping, the impact should be minimal.  ;)

If you have questions or concerns, please ask.

Thanks for the work T.

You're welcomed.  :)

Also note that StevenTing is responsible for having secured the dedicated server, and JesseL put in a good amount of time configuring Postfix for our email setup.

  Got a question.

Quote
  Upgrade WeTheArmed.com to SMF 2.0.1.

Will that do anything to degrade load times for dialup internet?

I ask, because, I don't know what types/upgrades some forums are, but a number recently have went from readable, to super-slow loading.

Much the same as the recent website "improvements"  :banghead  that jgsales and midwayusa have done.

There are some optimizations we can do to make things faster for dial-up users.  I can see about implementing them after the upgrade is complete.

Sites like J&G and Midway use HEAVILY customized versions of Wordpress.  If not done just right, Wordpress can slow greatly after customization.

SMF is the same to a point.  However, our default theme is very slim-line.  We don't employ extravagant theme alterations or anything.  Our themes are basically just cosmetic.

As for modifications, we will only be employing the bare necessities.  We WON'T be hanging a bunch on garbage off the site that isn't needed; like some numbnut who puts every accessory on his AR.   Just what it takes to run the site efficiently.  A video embedding modification, a spoiler mod, a URL mod, some ad management, and a couple others.

Note though that our current site is hosted on a server with around 100 other sites.  We share bandwidth and processing power with all of them.

Our new site is a dedicated server.  We as well have premium bandwidth.  So even if WTA to get a little heavier, the upgrade in available processing power and bandwidth would easily offset that.

And as stated, alot of effort is put into WTA, we all appreciate a great place to come to and the effort it takes to run it.

Midway's site has always been really slow for me.   Even with a good cable connection and good pc.   I think their servers are just overloaded.

One thing I'd like to see on forum sites is the ability to turn off smileys just for mobile devices.  I know I can turn them off totally for my profile, but then they are off all the time, no matter which device I'm using.  They work fine on my pc,  but for some reason they always slow my phone to a crawl.

We still have some tweaks we're doing in the background but everything else should be working properly.  Hopefully everyone will notice the speed difference.

Note that there is currently an issue in the Creative Writing forum.  Longer posts aren't appearing.  Fear not... I check the DB and the data is there.  It's just not displaying.

We'll investigate and have it working as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience.

I'm pretty sure I found the issue.  It's a size limit set in Apache.  Unfortunately I'm not in a position to fix it right now as I'm in the car headed across town.  (Don't worry... wife is driving.)

I'll get this handled as soon as I get back home later this afternoon.

Until then, posts longer than 64k in size will not display.  Nor can you post any text longer than 64k, so be careful.

Carry on.

Yes.  It was an extremely customized theme and wasn't very efficient, which made porting it to 2.0 nearly impossible.

You can change to another theme by going to Profile > Modify Profile >Look and Layout

You can then change the theme in there.

It's caching DNS.  Try changing the DNS on it to Google's DNS servers, access the site, then change it back to your ISPs DNS servers (or whatever it was set to before).

Google DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

As Steven says, I haven't added it yet.  I'll work on that next.

As to the blank posts in Creative Writing, that is almost solved.

For those interested, the problem is this...

When text is typed into Microsoft Word, Word will alter it in some ways that aren't very universally-friendly.  For example, Word will replace straight quotes with Smart Quotes (curly quotes), replace three periods (...) with an ellipsis (three dots as one character), replace a dash with an "em dash", and so on.  SMF of old handled these differently.  The new SMF handles them properly for new posts, but old data is still f'd.  That results in the SQL query returning no data.

That's why these appear in Creative Writing; people copy and paste from Word.  This issue does show up elsewhere though.  Just not as prevalent.

Soooo... the roughly 12,000 posts that have these characters in them must be altered directly in the database.  It's in the works.

I should have Tapatalk online after I finish this.

Carry on.

-T.

EDIT:  All done, or should be.  If anyone sees a blank post going forward, please PM me.

WTA 2.0 looks awesome guys. I actually think I like it more than the original (and I'm using the default appearance).

2 things I've noticed, though; It's logging me out after I close out of my browser, whereas on 1.0 I'd stay logged in even if I shut down my computer. I suspect that might just be FireFox takin' a dump on me, however. EDITED: Yeah, nevermind this part. It was my browser takin' a dump on me.

Also, the "view recent post" pages aren't automatically updating after I view a thread. The page updates when I manually reload it, but doesn't do it automatically like 1.0 did.

Thanks.

Also, the "view recent post" pages aren't automatically updating after I view a thread. The page updates when I manually reload it, but doesn't do it automatically like 1.0 did.

Indeed that is a change, but not due to the upgrade.  1.x had the same functionality in this regard.  There's an option to prevent browsers from caching pages, thereby causing a refresh on every hit, even when hitting the back button.  So instead of going back to the page you left, you're technically going back to a newly generated page.

I disabled this option during the upgrade.  There are several reasons...

1.  It greatly reduces bandwidth.  For example, a user might hit the Unread Replies link, then click a given link to read the content.  Once finished, the user may hit the back button to go back to his list of unread replies.  The user simply wants to hit the next post in the list.  By allowing the browser to cache, we can reduce the bandwidth used as well as lighten the load on the processor due to new SQL queries.  This adds up to an overall net gain in performance across the entire system for everyone.  and the user can still click the next link in his list.

2.  Helps prevent dropped post data.  Ever type out a big post, maybe a range report or something, then hit the wrong button or accidentally click a link before posting?  Then you frantically hit the back button hoping your the text will still be in the box?  Of course, it isn't.  Because we've prevented your browser from caching it.  You now have to type it all over.  That sucks.  But now that we are allowing caching, you can get that text back by hitting the back button.  WOOT.

3.  It prevents missing posts in the Unread Posts/Replies list.  Many times people maybe be using several methods for accessing the site, like their computer and a cell phone for example.  Or sometimes people will be using a read-ahead browser, like Opera or IE9, that tries to predict your habits and download content before you click the link.  In cases like these, every hit refreshes your session and tells the server to send you the most up-to-date content.  You'd think that would be good, buuuut... every hit also causes the forum software to mark post read.  As such, you may have 10 posts, click one, hit back, and somehow have 7, even though you only read one because either your browser or another device hit it before you.  So you miss the content.  Now though, you can safely hit back and get what was there before, even if another device marked it read.

The down sides here are...

a)  You have to click something to get an updated page; and...
b)  There is slightly higher potential for double-taps (posting the same post twice) if not paying attention.

For the downsides though, I think the upsides easily outweigh them.  Your browser caches for a reason.  Better to let it do it's job while we do ours, hmm?

And it's also how the vast majority of forums run anyway.  So of course while it will take a small amount of getting use to for our long-time members, it's not THAT big of a deal, and for most forum junkies out there it really shouldn't be unexpected behavior.

I'm going to go on the record, and say that I really, really enjoyed the auto-update feature on back-button. However, I also now know the reason nothing was marked unread when I'd wander off for a while, then hit the next page in a thread.

Speaking of, that was another thing I really liked that seems to be missing, though it could be browser-crapping-syndrome. None of the new posts have the NEW icon next to them anymore, even though they're obviously going to the new posts in a thread.

Is that an option I could turn on at my end?

Are you talking about on individual posts or on topics? I see them next to topics with new posts, but gotta check to see if it's next to new Posts.

Sorry, talking about the icon next to individual posts inside the thread. I'm seeing the ones next to thread titles in the forum list.

Also... not so much a fan of the updated smileys. I AM glad to see that Panic, Facepalm, Coffee, and Vomit (my four favorites) are unchanged, but the default ones? Meh.

So I don't come off sounding like a Sour Susan, for the record the site is loading a LOT faster for me. Like, easily a quarter of the average loading times.

I'm starting to dig the Sullen Madness 2.0 theme now...

Sorry, talking about the icon next to individual posts inside the thread. I'm seeing the ones next to thread titles in the forum list.

Honestly I've never noticed.

I'm looking at the default theme in SMF (which has remained unaltered) and don't see what you're referring to.  So if it was there before, it must be gone for v2.0.

As for the smileys, a major complaint has always been that the SMF default smiley set sucked.  I agree.  So I put in a more modern looking set.

As for the others, we let that get way out of control, to the point of it being a total mess.  So they were pruned back to a manageable set.  Old posts with them still work, they are not available from the post form anymore.

...

I'd consider changing some items if it turns out to be a big deal among the membership, but that window is closing quickly.  As the board ages, we're going to have to set some things in stone.  Unfortunately we can't be personalizing for every member.  Ya know?

Any chance we can finally get that drooly smiley we've been looking for?

Good Lord, if I've gotta go back and find every post asking for one... I won't get anything done at work tomorrow.  ;)

Can't I just make one up and send it to you?  :)  .gif, right?

No more zombie smileys...(sniff)  No more Godzilla smiley...(sniff)  No more Cthulhu smiley...(sniff)
Though I think I was the only one to ever use the Godzilla smiley.

When I click the new button on a thread it doesn't take me to the newest post but to the top of the page the new post is on.  I have to scroll downto locate the new post

Is there a setting i should check that I havent seen or has anyone noticed this?

Is this on your iPad?  Phone?

I noticed this on mobile devices and haven't figured it out.  Seems fine though in IE and Firefox.

It's doing that on my Android tablet. I'm using the browser and the standard site.  :shrug

Try the default theme and see if the problem persists.  That may help narrow the issue down.

EDIT:  Rather, I meant the default SMF theme Curve.  Not WTA's default.

Yep. Same problem with Curve.  I'm thinking it may have to do with the pretty URL mod? The #new is there at the end of the links, but when the mobile browser gets redirected to the prettified URL the #new is gone.

I think you may be right.  That's not the only issue with that mod.

I just disabled it.  See if it works now.

Cool.

That's going to hurt with the search engines for awhile.  Break some hard links to I think.

Oh well.   :-\

EDIT:  Actually, I can make an end-run around these issues.  WOOT!

Yeah.  I installed a reverter mod from the same author.  Makes old links keep working while not changing new ones.

Check that the original issue has not cropped up again.

You just have to have your hands in it all day every day.  When you know the basic principles you really learn the rest pretty quickly, usually on the fly.
