Just wanted to say hello...my name is Daniel and I'm a 29 year old graduate student and police/fire/medical dispatcher and 911 calltaker.  Finishing up a master's in criminal justice administration this fall and then I'm for sale to the highest bidder.  Been an IPSC/USPSA/3 gunner since I was about 15 years old, load my own ammo (2 Dillon 550 presses) and am tinkering with gunsmithing.  I'm also an Eagle Scout and, even though my wife thinks I'm slightly paranoid/crazy, she tolerates my buildup of SHTF scenario stuff, lately including dry goods, canned foods, ammo and such.  I saw the damage and borderline lawlessness of Katrina firsthand and quickly woke up to the scary fact that the world we live in is fragile and can fall apart before you know it's happening.  Looking forward to meeting some good people here.

Hi everyone!  Definite newbie here.  I was referred to this site by a friend in neighborhood watch.  He let me know that I'd find like-minded individuals here...I hope that's the case.  I have a blog at http://issuesoncall.blogspot.com where I talk about political and religious issues (you may get a feel for my thought process there).  Additionally, my husband and I are starting a web design company at www.speedyspyder.com.  We have put together a temp website to get the wording right, as well as appearance and I am starting the coding today.  Any feedback would be fabulous.  Also, my hubby and I are attempting to figure out the gun thing.  I think this site will be fantastic for that.  My friend that referred me said that there was a post asking for someone to blog rants about Obama.  My blog already fits that category:)  I am an over-achiever who had many years of undiagnosed late-stage Lyme disease to study current events and global and national issues.  Currently, I am healed of the Lyme (soooo grateful to be alive and well!) and I am making up for lost ground (although I learned a ton while sick and so wouldn't turn back the clock).  I am concerned for the Constitution to say the least and concerned for the future of my two children (and whether we are going to be forced back into the stone age by mismanagement of the world economy).  I look forward to meeting everyone possible  (Just be expecting humor and a mostly overwhelmingly positive attitude, as well as candid comments)!

The best way to figure out the gun thing is to ask questions.  Most of the members here have the respect not to flame, unless it is truly done in humor.  We're like a family here.  A positive attitude is good, since for conservatives, many things seem to be going wrong.  Look forward to reading what you have to say.

Emergency Management is technically the major.  The degree itself is a BPA (Bachelor's of Public Administration).

The E.M. degree is basically a professional program to turn out professional emergency managers such as you might find working for FEMA or for local or state governments.  We're the guys that decide on how to respond to hurricanes and terrorist attacks, order evacuations, etc....  So at the federal level, someone with my degree might work for FEMA; at the municipal level, there might be a city emergency manager or office of emergency management that provides the framework or umbrella under which law enforcement, fire/rescue, ems, and all other municipal departments coordinate.  That all sounds fancy and fun(picture Tommy Lee Jones in Volcano stepping off the helicopter and barking orders to everyone around "you go here, you go there"), but in practice, the position usually doesn't carry that much authority.  At least in Texas, the authority will rest with the mayor or equivalent authority, but because mayors aren't usually experts in disaster/emergency management, there will be a professional staff making recommendations.

It is not a very common program, and is only offered at a handful of universities around the nation.  Our program at UNT (North Texas) was the first in the nation, I'm told, and was only founded in '83.  However, it is a growing field, and in our unfortunate post-9/11, post-Katrina world, you could say there's a certain degree of job security in the field.  Especially with the big government binge we seem to be on right now *sigh*.....  My interest is in working at the municipal level....maybe state if the deal is sweet enough.  But the action is really at the local level (assuming you get a disaster, which isn't something we want... I don't want to come off sounding like we do).  For all the crap people gave FEMA after Katrina, what people wanted really wasn't FEMA's job.  FEMA typically isn't supposed to do jack crap.  95% of FEMA's roll is just to write checks to subsidize the local responders after the fact (I have an issue with this, but that's another discussion.)  So a FEMA job would just be an office job.   The Big Show would be working for a city or county government anywhere on the gulf coast.

New to the forum but a "stubborn old man" (at least my wife thinks so). Been married 27 years, 2 daughters, 2 dogs. I am living in a sea of estrogen. Southern California (South Western Riverside County) is home. I love the state but I have a high distain for the people who run the state. Can't seem to get rid of them. Love to shoot when possible. Have a C+R. Picked up an M1 with it. Love to reload.  I found this site from "ParallaxBill's Curio & Relic and Military Surplus Firearms Forums" hope to learn from the site.
