My mom grew up in Sherwood, OR.  Used to be way out in the Willamette valley farming country, now it's just another ring suburb of Portland.  Grandparents moved to Lincoln City in the 70's and stayed there until they died in the late 80's.

Crater Lake, Multnomah Falls, Diamond Lake, Medford, the Ashland festival, Agate Beach, Sea Lion caves, salmon fishing out of Depoe Bay, and crabbing for Dungeness and surf-casting for perch in Lincoln City are all among the fondest times of my childhood, especially since they all happened on summer vacations while growing up in NYC and NJ.

Oh, and mom was an OSU (back then it was OSC) grad, so I really LOVED watching the Beavers trash USC the other day.

I'm new to this forum.  I used to post at The High Road but have not been there in a while.  It's too bad that there is a struggle on that forum.  Most of the people were very considerate and knowledgeable.  I look forward to this new forum.

My grandfathers farm is just outside of Marshall, IL.  I spent may a summer there shooting 22's and shotguns.

I long ago escaped to the west, but still miss family, fall leaves, and bass fishing.

By way of introduction I thought I'd post here myself.

Some of y'all may know me as Spinner on other boards.

I am a 42 year old male, born raised and living in New Zealand.  A consultant coastal ecologist with a master's degree in marine biology, I'm reasonably intelligent but I hide it real well.

Living in New Zealand I don't get to play with handguns or "military styled semi-automatic" firearms (basically anything semi-auto that has a pistol grip, a bayonet lug or a mag capacity exceeding 7 rounds) ... at least not without a particular firearms licence endorsement that is expensive and quite involved to obtain and maintain.  Sound moderators, however, are completely cool here .... they're not licenced, villified or considered to be otherwise evil and many people have a moderator on their .22s ... makes rabbit hunting a little easier.

I own a 2.5 acre property in the semi-rural outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and I try to go shooting, hunting and fishing when I can.  Married with two dogs (border collies) and a large property to maintain my free time is often spoken for well in advance though so "me time" can be a bit hard to come by.

Seeing as I'm on the other side of the world from most of you guys, I'm in summer while you're in winter, I'm in daylight while you're in darkness and our hunting seasons are completely different to yours.  Actually, we don't have any deer hunting seasons (apart from some specific areas where hunting is controlled due to forest harvesting), its only gamebirds (waterfowl and upland birds) that have seasonal hunting here.  Species to hunt here include thar, chamois, red deer, sika deer, wapiti, rusa deer, fallow deer, whitetail deer, wild goats, wild pigs, rabbits, hares, wallabies, wild sheep, wild cattle and possums (all introduced animals and therefore offically regarded as pests for the most part).  Birds include several species of duck, geese, swans, pheasant and quail.  Freshwater fishing includes rainbow and brown trout and salmon, while we have a whole range of saltwater fish to lure ... most of which are extremely good to eat (bonus!!).

I have trained in Taekwon Do and Goshin Ryu Ju Jutsu for a total of 5.5 years, however, that was a while ago and I'm now a little fat and lazy, but hankering for more martial arts learning ... currently considering Aikido as soon as I can find a good dojo not too far away.

I'm here to maybe provide a slightly different flavour to some of the discussion.  I tend to lurk more than post, but am happy to contribute if I have anything relevant to add.

I've just got back from 7 weeks touring around Europe (mostly Italy, but France, Belgium and the UK too) and I have to say that toilets in Europe are something else entirely.

It's a bit of an education when you walk into the stall and find yourself looking at a hole in the ground.  "What the heck do I do with this thing? .... and ..... which way do I do it??"  For some reason there are quite a few of the squat toilets in Europe ... maybe not in the hotels, but in the lower end accomodation that we stayed in (mostly camp grounds) its a roll of the dice as to what you'll find when you open that stall door.  If there's any toilet paper you're extremely lucky, but there won't be any soap or any way to dry your hands .... maybe that's why Italians kiss each other on the cheek rather than shaking hands?

In Milan we were out sightseeing one day and my wife asked a shopkeeper (in her best Italian ... Scusi, sa dové il bagno publico, per favore?) where the public toilets were.  We were directed to the McDonalds down the street.   

Its a different world I tell ya.

As for NZ, our toilets are completely normal, its you guys that are bass ackwards.
