New holster contest September/October
« on: September 19, 2017, 07:00:58 pm »
So guys I had a bit of a new idea for a contest, and this is very much different than what we've done thus far;) But here's the deal I was thinking about this today and I'll blame Mike Rowe, watching his new show and I got thinking I wonder if I could do something cool for someone not able to afford a rig etc. I'm not building someone a house and I know a holster isn't a necessity but it's nice especially if you're in a financial situation where you just can't afford it. Most of us have been there at some point or another and I'd like to be able to do something nice for someone.

So here's how I'd like this to go, I'd like you to think of someone you know well who could use a good holster. Post just a quick backstory without names or other identifying information. More backstory of sorts, if it's too personal feel free to email it to me [email protected] and I'll keep it confidential and private and include them in the drawing. Then when I draw a person from that stack of names I'll contact the person that submitted it to get all the gun/hand/color information on the giveaway holster. So keep in mind whoever you submit you're responsible for getting me the information to build them the proper holster!:) So if you can't get that info please don't add them since I'd like this to be a surprise of sorts, I think ideally something that just makes a good day for them as a gift.

Timetable will be as soon as I get the drawing done, and all the info I'll try and get it done as quickly as possible and out the door. Hopefully that will be within a couple weeks of the end of the contest. This one will run the last bit of this month and all next month.

Also if you can't think of someone, think about family, friends, anyone you know that would appreciate this type of thing for them and use it. I don't know what type of response I'll get from this as far as how many entries, but I thought it might be an interesting thing to do for someone with the holidays coming up.

Here is an example of someone I know with a few changes etc:
Quote
Buddy of mine, good family guy been tight on cash and really been a good friend over the years. Recently bought his first carry gun and was working through that and getting his CPL and eventually picking up a decent carry rig for it as well. Overall though just a great guy and busy taking care of his family and working seldom doing anything for himself.

So something like that, try to keep it vague I don't want anyone getting upset that their private situation is being shared online.

So throw out some guys that deserve a rig and I'll draw out one and work out the details at the end of next month. Also this will be a free rig, not a discount etc. Just free and clear I'll cover any additional costs above normal to make it happen and ship it to them.

Take care!

Luke

REMINDER: Don't post names etc, just a vague story to explain it and we'll use that and I'll get with you privately if your guy wins to get the name/address/info etc. Just don't want someone's private information out there in the wild without their permission.

This is very nice of you to do, Luke  :thumbup1.

I'll refrain from entering this one, cos I know there are some guys out there who are much less fortunate than me and mine.

Well keep an eye out I'm not sure what participation will be for this, so I don't want to restrict guys/gals either, since it isn't a necessity it's a nice thing that the person probably wouldn't do for themselves.

Mostly I'm just thinking if I were in their shoes I think it would be cool, so we'll give it a try;)

I'll start. I would like a holster to go to my 83 year old neighbor who is as spry as a 40 year old. This guy is a life long gun owner and hunter. He carries his Ruger SR1911 cross draw (he is right handed) and calls it "Big Iron" (after the Marty Robbins song). His current holster is one of those universal nylon/cordura type and is falling apart.

I was planning on trying to make him a leather holster, but I have never made one before and barely have the time for my own projects.

My neighbor is "that guy" in the neighborhood who puts away other people's trash cans when they forget, mows their lawn when they are on vacation and is always on the lookout for burglars, thieves, drug dealers etc...the neighborhood wouldn't be the same without him.

BTW if I do win, I would like to document the holster making and presenting of the prize to my neighbor

    Thanks! :thumbup1

Not participating (and it wouldn't matter if I did, as I already bought him one of your rigs ;) ), but I would nominate my stepfather.

For one, he got me started on shooting. I'd always been interested in weapons, but he started me on firearms in particular.

For the other, on top of being a very good model of how to be a father, he went above and beyond a few years ago during our move back from Athens to Atlanta, in helping me get my wife's townhouse ready for sale.  Thanks to renters who didn't take care of the place, we had to gut the place - rip out the carpeting, take the bathrooms back to studs, rip up ruined (non-solid) wood flooring, tile the bathroom floors and showerstalls, replace every. single. electrical. outlet (I was on my own for that one, though... he doesn't touch sparky stuff, lol).  All while I had to start a new job and make a good impression at work.

Which means he did the lion's share of the work. So, for Father's Day after we had everything finished, I bought him a holster and mag carrier from Luke. He was tickled by it, and very impressed with the craftsmanship in it.

I'd like to nominate my younger brother.  He is helping my Mom take care of my Dad on the other side of the country from me, doing the things she can't.  He lives about 40 miles away from them.  He just started a new job after being unemployed for over a year, so he's doing that on top of helping Mom.  His father in law who treated him like a son just passed unexpectedly from a medical issue during Irma, so he and his wife are dealing with that.

I figure that if he wins, he won't feel obligated to get me something in return, like he would if I bought him a gift.

Good stuff across the board guys keep them coming this is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping this to work out to be. If I had the time/money because of course they are both tied together. I'd love to give each suggestion a rig, but I can't do that;)

But you never know maybe if this works out well we'll do some more of this style of thing, I dig the idea of it so I'm hoping it really can help someone out;)

I don't have anybody in mind personally but I could get behind the idea of providing a disabled vet with a custom built rig.  Somebody that is learning to use the wrong hand or using a holster from a wheelchair with no way to strap on a regular holster might very much appreciate the gesture, no?   :hmm

A custom designed rig might be more than you're willing to take on with a backlog of orders but if its just a left hand version it shouldn't be a problem, right?

I'm plenty cool with it being a fairly normal rig and I should have specified but something in that base model range around $120ish value. Hand doesn't matter so long as we get it right;) On design I'd say it depends completely on the need. A rig for a wheelchair would be probably fairly difficult for me since I've got almost no experience around them to work from. But other stuff I'd say maybe depends on how much time I think it will take. That said if there is a need in an odd section of the market being ignored always feel free to give me a shout since I may have an idea or something that might work in that niche.

    Take care

Well, if we end up going this route for a disabled vet I'd kick in a few bucks to offset any additional cost involved in getting it right.

Just bringing this back up, need some more suggestions for guys since right now we're flipping a coin;) Not that it's a bad thing, one of these two at this point would be getting it. But just wanted to remind guys that this will be running for a bit more and get in some suggestions.

Sorry, I cant help here.  I really don't know of many 'poor' people, (poor being a state of mind, anyway) and those I do would not qualify as needing or deserving.  Those among family that have less, get taken care of by family.  When it comes to defense, that normally means that I have already bought them the minimum guns or gear that they need.

Maybe a better way to do this would be to donate the time and materials to make a standard rig, and auction the build on gunbroker.  Advertise it here, and on every other forum that you frequent.  When the high bidder pays, donate the funds to some charity that has a connection to the gun community.  That is what I would do.

Well... if I can still participate, I do have someone else I could nominate: my stepbrother.

Out of college, he went to work for as a corrections officer in Kennesaw, then worked for as a county deputy in... Covington, I think, before going through the Georgia State Patrol Academy and serving in the GSP until having to take a medical retirement recently (knees and heart problems).  While in the GSP, he served in the motorcycle corps, and went through the California Highway Patrol motorcycle training course (and passed with flying colors, I might add - to the point of the guy running the training trying to hire Matt away from the GSP).

I just think it'd be nice to give him a rig as a thanks for his years as an officer.

Also, he often joined my stepfather and I when we went shooting, and let me shoot my first 9mm semi-automatic. He was a little miffed when my first shot of five took out the 'x' in the center, but not as miffed as when my sister did the same with his .44 magnum.

Full disclosure here: firing that thing once was enough for her...

Sister pulls the trigger: *BOOM* "Okay, here ya go" *winds target back* "Heh, cool."
Matt: *looks at the target and sighs* "Dammit" .

So guys I made a big of an executive decision here on this contest;) First of all I drew of our three options and I pulled TINCANBANDIT So you can get ahold of me with information about what we'll be doing for your neighbor. Congratulations;)

Now on the decision bit, well I felt like all three really could use a rig so we're going to do that. Now there is a caveat that I can't just up and build all three at once. So right now my plan is to build one next month and one the following month. And since the drawing pulled Tincanbandit and the other two were later, let's just do them chronologically. So RetroGrouch let's plan your brother for December and get me his details, and Booksmart let's do your stepbrother in January.

So we'll see how this all comes together but I figured it would be a good way to solve this particular dilemma;) So congrats to all three and get in contact with me through email rather than PM, [email protected] since I don't want to loose track of anything and I'm sure we'll be covering some info with names etc.

    Take care!

yep, it arrived today, so I snapped a picture of it and ran it over to him, it is beautiful!

He may not look excited but he is, he has a hard time accepting gifts, must be a generational thing. He is holding his old ratty holster in his hand (in case you were wondering what that was)

anyway it looks great and fits really well

    Thanks again Luke!

BTW did you get some shots of the making of the holster for my blog?

Sorry yesterday was a bit crazy I was chasing a holster that got sent to the wrong address trying to get it before it left the area;) So I didn't end up with much time to actually post.

I'm glad to hear that he likes the rig, hopefully it works out well for him and he gets good use out of it;)
