Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
« on: January 02, 2016, 05:48:15 pm »
The million dollar question: What has been up with WTA the past two days?

I know we have these outages occasionally, and that is life, but this one has been a bit longer than usual.  Any ideas?

There's been a big DOS attack on the hosting company.   So it was affecting a large number of sites,  not just this one.

It's pretty targeted at our hosting company as their sites in Dallas, London, Singapore, Atlanta, and other locations were affected.

I had trouble getting on the site on New Years Day, but didn't give it a second thought when it came back on.
My website is back! It features over 100 pieces of fan fiction set in the Star Trek, Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000 universes.

We're talking about one of the most tech savvy companies out there... and this attack was savage enough to bring them to their knees for some 20 hours.
So this isn't some hacker kid that launched the attack.

Linode seems to be having some DoS issues again, but not in Dallas.  I checked and the machine did have some CPU and bandwidth spikes.

If I had to guess I'd say it was probably an aggressive search bot consuming all the bandwidth while it crawled the site.  Poorly written search bots can do that.  They're usually Chinese.  Doesn't seem to be happening now though.

I gave the sever a kick in any case.  Seems ok right now.

    Carry on.
