Video cards

OK i have a cheap new computer that has the  worst video card ever, it a integrated one to boot. So can I  instal a new video card on my computer?

    Also, check in the manual (if they bothered to provide one), and see if it says something about "open PCI-e" slots...

    This shows a rough comparison of Nvidia chips (which I like a lot better in spite of being an AMD fan)

    Somewhere on that site is also the same rundown of ATI's offerings. Lets you (mostly) compare apples to apples.

    Hard numbers are the way to go... most of the cards you see for $25-65 on tigerdirect and newegg aren't worth the free shipping, unless you don't plan to play games on them at all.

    That's just what I check when I think I see a cheap card that might be worth upgrading. Sadly they mention nothing about prices.

    Another good place to look (once you have an idae what you may want) is pricewatch.com. Computer parts by price.

    The 220 watt power supply in that Aspire is extremely marginal for running even a low-end video card. Your power supply doesn't appear to be in a standard format and probably can't be upgraded. It also appears that you need to go with a low profile card because of the way the PC internals are laid out.

    Honestly, I am loathe to recommend any upgrade. Between the weak power supply and uncertain clearance, I just don't know what will actually run and be a worthwhile upgrade over what is already there. To clarify one thing, you are only looking for an upgrade for general Windows 7 usage and possibly watching videos? Gaming is just about right out with that Aspire, but I can probably recommend something if you just want a non-gaming performance enhancement.

    A slightly older model card that doesn't have a fan would possibly work, but jaeger's right about the power supply being marginal.  It'll be testy... look for a low profile ATI Radeon HD... 4650, I think it is. I haven't had any problems with them running in Dells with 300w psu.

    It appears that a Radeon 5570 should work. A person in this thread appears to have installed one successfully. According to a review I checked out, a Radeon 6670 only draws about 9 watts more under load and is much faster. A side by side comparison of the 5670 and 6670 can be seen here.

    A few things to keep in mind:

    You absolutely must use a low profile card.
    The user who claims to have installed the 5570 might actually have an unstable system or might be drawing on the PSU hard enough to lead it, or components in his system, to an early death.
    Considering the high likelihood of you having stability issues with a card due to your power supply, you really might want to consider buying local for ease of return. This could significantly add to your cost.
