Home defense incident action plans?
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:14:54 am »
So tonight I was sitting in the chair watching tv, and I got the itch to fondle one of my rifles. So as I'm sitting there doing as much the thought crosses my mind what if at that moment a hostile force attempted entry into my home? Obvious my immediate response is stop the immediate threat, but then where to? Call 911 and get that ball rolling, make sure a warrant squad doesn't have a wrong address, but if the threat remains outside how do I secure the inside? Got me thinking of steps to take to secure my castle from a full frontal assault. Anyone else out there wondered along the same lines and made some good plans? I'm not talking which gun to grab I'm referring to how to barricade doors and windows what layers of defense, exit routes etc.

    Hmm...

Well, my basic plan would be to get everyone upstairs ASAP if we're not all up there already. Stairwell is a natural choke-point, and there's an alcove partway down that would be good cover/concealment. If that fails, into the study and out the window. Said window is right above the roof of our enclosed patio. Down the roof, short drop into the back yard, then over the fence to a neighbor's house.

Securing Casa del Raptor is, unfortunately, nigh impossible. The back door has a big window that, if smashed, provides easy access to the deadbolt handle and doorknob. And the doors to the enclosed patio, which is enclosed only by thing plastic mesh to keep the bugs out, are big French Doors, with near-floor-to-ceiling glass. One good smash and the BG is in.

Damn it. I really need a pocket pistol. And a shotgun.

BGs outside? Ive got a few options. Snipe at them from the third floor or second floor baw windows (I have full elevated coverage of entrances) or slip out the back and circle around through the woods and hit them from the side or behind

I advise getting yourself an AR-15 and practicing saying "Say, hello to my little friend!"  in a bad cuban accent.

Seriously though, you can buy stronger metal doors instead of your typical residential wood ones.    Use longer screws on the door jam, or buy one of those door blocking things you prop up on the inside.    If I ever have the money to build my own place from the ground up,  I'd like to go all out on this kind of stuff.  Unfortunately, you are somewhat limited as to what you can do when you are retrofitting an existing house.

Raptor have your folks look at getting those windows security filmed. It makes it very hard to break through glass.

That's a good idea about the window film, anybody have any first hand experience with it?

I've seen burglaries foiled by it at commercial businesses.

Not a bad idea. I'll mention it to my parents. One question: is it expensive? Not sure Papa Raptor will go for it if he thinks it's just an expensive "gimmick."

It's not a gimmick. It really works. It won't turn a window or glass door into an impenetrable barrier, but it will make it hard enough to break that it will buy you time against a determined burglar/invader and will deter someone who is skittish or hoping to make a quick/quiet entry.

As to expense, I don't know.

+1 on hardening strike plates and the like, fairly easy and cheap to do.

+10 on having a plan to get the family upstairs or down a hallway while you call 911 and wait for the cavalry.  There is a reason the .mil folks spend time practicing to clear buildings and call stairwells "death funnels"...,just make it painfully clear to the BG he isn't getting to your side without some extra holes.

As for sniping from a 2nd or 3rd story window....I would think unless you routinely stand armed watch and some guy runs up to the window and starts shooting inside you would be hard pressed to find yourself in a position to do this both physically and legally

If somebody is actively trying to force an entry I'm going to pop them soonest from the best position. The second story bay windows that overlook the entrance were built exactly for that scenario.

Depending on the scenario you may be stuck in the basement.
So figure how to shoot up through the floor and make them miserable.
    Heh heh.
