Shotgun slug danger range...
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:27:54 AM »

...may be longer than you think:

I received a direct answer on the estimated maximum danger range of rifled slug, sabot slug, .44 magnum and 45-70 rounds from Winchester Ammunition:

X12RS15- Rifled Slug, 1 ounce @ 1600 fps: 1,068 Yards

X44MHSP2- .44 Mag. 240 gr. @ 1760 fps: 2,239 Yards

X4570H- .45-70 300 gr. @ 1880 fps: 2,291 Yards

SSP12- 12Ga. 385 gr. @ 1900 fps: 2,971 Yards

The Winchester Tech. recommended adding 200 to 300 additional yards to allow for velocity variations, temperature, wind conditions, etc.

So.... who's gonna work out the math and make a 1500 yard shot with one of these?

I think I can arrange that... but I don't have that round.  Ah... and I don't have a rifled Gauge barrel...

... U.S. Army accuracy and penetration test of the .45-70-500 at 3,500 yards!  That is roughly 2 miles with black powder and lead bullets!

http://home.earthlink.net/~sharpsshtr/CritterPhotos/SandyHook/SandyHook.html

Handy for massed defilade fire.

Somehow I don't think the Winchester ammunition development team ever envisioned their 12 gauge sabot slugs used in defilade!

I think all you will need to do is mount 91/30 sights on your shotgun, then convert to meters :)

shot-slug: 1oz of #7 birdshot wrapped in tape, all flying as a single mass at 1200ft/s.

I know it buzzes towards the target like an angry demon-wasp out of hell.

I know within 20 yards it will fully penetrate and exit from a full phone book and crack a 2x6 afterwards.

I know it will not penetrate 3/4" plywood at 200 yards.

Danger range?  Getting hit by it at any speed is dangerous, but they're probably only deadly out to 75 or so yards.
Please take a look at my blog, there's guns and stuff.

my Flathead 600 grain Y-man type slugs are pretty much 150-300 effectively accurate with IC choke, 650 lethal if COM, and 1000 lethal if CNS/head. (according to math, real world varies greatly. I'd say 1,300 yards in open terrain.)

If I can shoot a Winchester STD 1 oz. 12 Ga. slug from a 2 3/4 inch shell out to 235+ yards and weylay a buck...(at a 45 degree angle about 22-24 inches penetration) and knock him on his assets...I'm guessing the danger range is quite a bit further. Maybe 600 to 1000 yards depending on environment, wind, temp, humidity, etc.

But then again, I can use a .338 Lapua with a good Zeiss Optics type Scope, and shoot squirrels up in the trees all day long.
But Deer? Nah! Need a deadly Slug gun or Handgun Cartridge rifle or pistol.
Bullet might go too far and kill someone by accident.
Figure that one out.
Hell, I could use a 40MM Auto Cannon to hunt squirrel and coyote if it were legal to hunt with here.
But not Deer. Go figure.

1100 Yards is pretty bloody optimistic.  I can't get slugs to reach 500.  Well, then again I am not shooting Feds, but Winchester Super X.

The response from Winchester for maximum danger range was:
X12RS15- Rifled Slug, 1 ounce @ 1600 fps: 1,068 Yards

I suspect the distances given are calculated for maximum range at optimum firing elevation.  Federal obviously rounded up their figures.

The question remains: Have maximum calculated distance figures been verified with actual testing?   :scrutiny
