Over the counter buckshot loads: My observations -
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:44:18 pm »
Best over the counter hunting buckshot:

Which will deliver the best hunting pattern? Well, all shotguns tend to be a law unto themselves but in general loads with buffer and a shotcup pattern better than those without. Hard shot or plated shot certainly helps.

Here is a quick list of over the counter 12 gauge hunting buckshot loads put up with buffer and a full length shot cup.

Federal Premium with Flite-Control Wad - 00 buck only, 9, and 12 pellet loads.

Federal Premium buckshot - all shot sizes (except 3.5" loads-partial shot cup)

Federal "regular" buckshot - all shot sizes

Winchester Super-X #1 Buckshot 2.75 and 3 inch loads. This is a low cost 'sleeper' load and is among the first to sell out locally. All other WW hunting buckshot, including Supreme loads do not have a shot cup.

Remington Express 9 pellet OO buckshot round.

Remington Low-Recoil 8 pellet 00

The 3.5" 18 pellet Remington round uses the same shot cup as the 9 pellet load and has 8 pellets exposed to bore scrub. All other buckshot hunting loads from Big Green lack a shot cup

Hornady Buckshot - 8 pellet 00

There are a lot of buckshot rounds on the market that have fiber wads and buffer but nothing to protect the pellets from pellet flattening bore scrub. Some of the foreign made buckshot rounds, like Wolf brand loads, don't even have buffer. This is not to say your particular shotgun won't pattern well with any of non-shotcup or non-buffered loads, only patterning will tell you that.

In my experience, if you want to get 40 yard hunting performance with conventional small buckshot, you need at minimum a 12 pellet load of OO buckshot. Federal Flite-Control loads are an exception to this.  For deer hunting I consider a 10 inch, 100% pattern at 25 yards a good minimum performance standard.

Your thoughts?

      Just putting this out there:

Of 3 shotguns, Fiocchi nickle-plated 00 buck, will spread about "normal" cheapo shotgun loads, however 3 or four buckshot will stay in a fist-sized group, centered out to about 25 yards.  I haven't had a chance to try my latest (A choke-tubed Mossy with 20" tube), but out of a long-barreled mossberg(M), a double(both M and F) and a Cylinder-bored Legacy Escort, it's done that.

I plan on getting more of the Fiocchi 00, if nothing else to have "full power" loads for practicing.     But I also plan on picking up some 3" federal 00 and #4 buck.

I've had very good luck with Winchester's Super X.  But I'll take Federal every time if I can find it available.

Back in the 1980's I had the importance of patterning buckshot loads driven home.  I had a Remington 1100 30" fixed full choke 12 bore with a 2.75" chamber.  Before the season began I decided to try a few buckshot loads. I chose two Federal loads, one was the common 12 pellet 00B short magnum and the other was the recently introduced Federal Premium version of the same load.

At 25 yards the standard Federal load printed a 15" doughnut pattern - not a single pellet hit in the middle of that target! A classic case of overchoke.  In contrast, the Federal Premium buckshot load printed consistent 9" center dense patterns with the same barrel/choke combination!

Long barrel, short barrel, full choke, no choke; none of that matters if you don't take the time to pattern your buckshot loads.

Not enough people pattern their shotguns - with buck or bird shot.

    An additional thought:

Federal LE loads have an all brass head/rim (instead of brass coated steel) to minimize the possibiltiy of an extraction failure.

A simple magnet test will reveal what type of shell head construction your favorite ammo has.

I like to rub a film of Slip2000 lube on the brass ahead of the rim to achieve the same effect for commercial buckshot and slug loads.

IMO, Federal is missing a bet by not marketing a 12 pellet #1 reduced recoil buckshot load. #1B just meets the FBI 12 inch standard penetration mark while at the same time reducing the potential for overpenetration in home protection venues.

I've not.  I'd like to though.  However I seriously doubt that it can match Federal's new Tactical load.... that Flight Control Wad is made of dark magic.... really good dark magic.

Hornady's VersaTite wad and Federal's Flite Control wad are one in the same.

The wad is clearly seen in this short coyote hunting/promotional video:

That is something I want to buy as well.  I also want a 9 pellet 0 buck load.  They could use the same wad for both.
What do you know, Hornady and Federal's 00 IS actually 0.  The better to fit in the shotcup I suppose.  Winchester is loading undersized  00 too.  I guess that leaves Remington if you want real 00.

Remington's 9 pellet 00B load is contained in a Power Piston one piece plastic wad. The actual pellet size (measured) is .325 inch.

That is still kinda puny, but .010" bigger than the others.

Nor do I, but wouldn't it be nice to occasionally get what is promised?  I mean, how hard could it be to print one zero on a box instead of two?  But no, everybody wants 00.  #!@$%& post office!

IMO, it's no different than the 429(oops, I mean 44) mag thing....
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . That wad is really incredible. I've not tried the full power buckshot version, but the reduced recoil is really tight. I've heard rumors of a #4 version called Prarie Storm.

But that Federal Premium is awesome out of an un-choked barrel. It would be interesting to see how it works in a choked barrel.

    ANSI/SAAMI Standards for shotshells:

    Buckshot Pellet Count Per Shell

       0B & 00B        Nominal    -1 pellet
       1B & smaller   Nominal    -2 pellets

    Diameter

        Buckshot       Nominal      +0.015"

    ----------------------------------------------------------

      There you have it:
