How far will lead shot travel?
« on: March 04, 2012, 12:14:00 AM »
This may be handy to know.   :hmm

"Journee's Formula" for estimating maximum shot travel:

Lead shot size diameter in inches, (expressed as a decimal), multiplied by 2200 gives the maximum potential distance in yards.

To convert SAMMI voluntary numerical shot sizes to decimal, subtract shot size from 17.

Example: 17 - 6 (shot size) = 11      Move decimal two places to the left .11"

SAMMI #6 lead shot .11 x 2200 = 242 Yards

Federal 00B -measured, .325 x 2200 = 715 yards

When I was taking my hunter's exam class, the instructor said a rule of thumb was to take the shot size in mm, multiply by 100, and that number would be the distance in meters.

That's a lot farther than I would have thought - but then I realized that's absolute travel, not danger travel.

Yeah... I was gonna say, danger distance can't be that far.

I recall one of the coach Knight complaints from a neighbor:  Knight's shotgun pellets kept peppering his windows, or ending up in his hot tub and pool.  This would help support whether it could have really happened or not.

I don't know if it was substantiated, but the idea of a man who should not have passed a background check to buy a folding metal chair, shooting toward one's house did seem disturbing.

a friend of mine and i were walking up the river to our swim spot with a huge sycamore tree with a rope swing and everything, anyway we were getting hit by falling birdshot and finally we figured out there was a new shooting range about 300 meters away in a feild on the other side of the river. and we were getting hit by birdshot so it goes pretty far but it was just falling so we were not hurt

Even so man, that's annoying.  You should speak to the club and get them to adjust their course of fire so they aren't dropping shot on you.
