I remember selling those Mossbergs as a kit that came with both a pistol grip & a stock and I've had a box of pistol grips & stocks that the customers gave back to the shop because they didn't want the other option.  Now I don't know if what you are buying was originally manufactured as a PG only firearm, with a full stock & then replaced with a factory PG, or was sold as the kit with both options and the stock is gone and I do believe that how it was originally manufactured determines if it can be regulated as just a "firearm" and not a "shotgun" and can be shortened w/o going through the ATF.  Just because it's now being sold as "other" doesn't mean it was manufactured that way.  I really hope your research is good because the last thing I want to hear is that my buddy is in trouble.  I hope that Mossberg finally gets back to you with what you need to hear.

    Update:
Well, not much of an update on this project... Other than the gun is now transfered to me and it's home.
Still has the asinine pistol grip on it.  I've not swapped it off yet for the original.
Namely because I cant take it off because I don't have an alan wrench big enough to take the PG off it so I can remove the trigger group so I can take out the bolt so I can pull off the pump assembly so I can swap the grip out.
    *sigh*
    Patience.

I think I'm going to put a Magpul stock on this thing.
Would that not turn it into a 'shotgun,' making it permanently ineligible for the 14" PGO configuration?

To update this thread, the Mossy now sports the Magpul stock and I think that was the right decision.
And after much consideration, decided that if I'm going to SBS anything - it's going to be an 870, because I just remain a larger fan of that platform. And if I wanted a strange little pistol shotty type thing, Serbu's Shorty is the way to go - again - on an 870 platform.
I also decided that I really do indeed need to get a KSG.
    Anyways...

Having spent some time with the Magpulled Mossy... I have to say that I really do like the Magpul stock on the Mossberg.  It positions the thumb right where it needs to be for easy working of the Safety.  Has enough ergo's to really improve the weapon handling for me.  I did not change the front end to Mossy.  I did get rid of the Pistol Grip up front and went to the Mossy standard tactical fore end.  And I took off the Side Saddle.  Which is weird because normally I spend money to put them on!    And here, I took it off after specifically buying this one because it had it on!
    Yes, I'm conflicted.
I may put it back on again some time... But for now, I'm really just digging the light weight simplicity of it.

I'll most likely use it for a bit and then give it to one of my boys...
Use it as a Training Tool for next time I teach a tactical shotgun course.
Really this stock.  The Magpul stock - if you are running a Mossberg 500/590 - You need this stock.
I'm tempted to replace the Butler Creek folding stock on one of my 870 Tacticals.

Never heard of the butler creek stock before. It actually looks comfortable for a folding stock  :hmm.

Now a kit is available to set up a Mossberg 500/Maverick 88 as a 14" barrel PGO without buying a new barrel and mag tube:

Okay, that's interesting.   At first I was thinking "That is Ghetto As Hell".  But then the more I thought about it, and even read over the instructions... that initial thought changed to "that's actually rather brilliant".
    Huh.
You know, I'd never do that to a Remington... but a cheap Mossy?  You are not going to hurt that.  Mossys dont care.  Mossys are like Honey Badgers.
The more I think about it.  I kinda like that.

I built one with the raptor lug, worked quite well but was a pain to get over the barrel, ended up with a blister after 30 minutes of work.  The lug saves you quite a bit of money, and you still get the nice short package.  I loved my 14" Mossy, it was my trunk gun for a few months, but then when I took my wife out shooting, she hated it.  It was the only firearm my wife ever asked me to get rid of.

I apologize for the above partial post.  I hit 'post' instead of 'preview,' and when I went to try to edit it, the server was giving me a hard time logging on.  Sorry about that.  Here is the full version of what I intended to say:

Having had a Mossberg 500, and currently owning an older 870, (May '80) I can say hands-down, that I prefer the Remington.  While the Mossberg just felt 'chinsy,' and cheaply made, the Remington is unquestionably a quality weapon.  Everything about the operation is smoother, and the controls are (subjectivity) better thought out on the Remington platform.  The Remington is the only of my firearms that deserves a name.

How does this tie in with what George was saying?  The difference between the quality, soothness, and feel being what it is, for me a Remington would be a better choice, even for a hacksaw 'SBS' modification.

Mossberg is jumping into the 14" barrel / 26.5" OAL   non-NFA firearm market with a 590 variation this year:

So what does this mean? Can I own one without having to have any kind of special license? I've always been interested by the Mossberg PGO and like, but I don't quite understand what it is I have to so to own one.

ETA: after watching the video ...  :hide.

    It makes more sense.

My question still stands regarding the "PGO" model though. Also did she say a "$5" tax stamp? Never heard of that. I've only ever heard of the $200 tax stamp.
