Classic example of shooting too far with buckshot
« on: April 25, 2016, 05:49:46 pm »
Here is a perfect example of shooting at a deer too far away!

The shooting starts at frame 11:40

Recovery starts at 15:50

At "100 yards"  six rounds were fired at this running deer,  When the deer was finally found it had one hit in the lungs by a single pellet and three pellets in the paunch and hind quarter.  From my point of view, that was simply a lucky hit at a range beyond any reasonable certainty of placing a lethal pattern on target.

If the six rounds fired were of the commonly used 15 pellet 00B variety, then a total of 90 pellets were fired at that deer!

Textbook definition of "buck fever".  Dumba** needs to know when to shoot and when to keep his finger off the trigger.  He got really lucky and the deer got really unlucky.  The lethal pellet could have just as easily missed the animal entirely at that range.

If it'd been my hunt, or I had been on the hunt I woulda wrapped that shotgun around his neck.

if I had to guess.....I'd say those pellets were from the first shot.  I doubt any of his last 5 shots even came close.

Watching the video I'd say you're right. First shot was the hit.

I'm not sure what I just watched but it's not hunting at least as I know it. More like skeet or trap with deer, not my cup of tea.

See, this is why you guys haven't run me off... you're adamant about humane hunting.

I'll say a large percentage (sadly, maybe not majoriy, but probably even a majority) are quite fair and humane hunters.

Like gun-owners, it's the youtubers, braggarts and A-holes who are the most vocal, whom are the worst and get seen.

Not to drive off Booksmart, (and this is 'pest control,' not hunting) but a neighboring farmer once advised me that the easiest way to cull groundhogs is to shoot them in the backside with a .17 rifle.  Apparently it blows quite a chunk out, but gives them just enough time to crawl back down their hole before they bleed out...  The best part: no carcass to dispose of.

never used to worry about that back in the day when we could shoot prairie dogs.  buzzards, hawks and coyotes ate well.

Yeah  :-\ ... Prairie dogs are a special sort of nasty creature. I don't really hunt or anything, I'd rather look at the the critters than shoot them, but I make excceptions for tree vermin (squirrels) and prairie dogs. Sometimes I let the squirrels get away as well, but they have been known to knock out our internet so.... :sniper.

^ This ^ .  Toss the carcass(es) in the back of the farm truck and haul them back to the edge of the woods away from the outbuildings.  A day or two later and there's nothing left except for maybe a bit of fur and some bone fragments.   Never shot one with a .17 but the .22 mag either center of mass or in the head is a one shot affair.  No muss, no fuss and no crawling off to die in a hole and stinking up the barn or stable for a couple of weeks until the rats and the bugs take care of business.
