So my DVD player kicked the bucket...Now what?
« on: October 11, 2013, 02:20:04 pm »
Well as the title says my DVD player has given up the ghost and no longer works. This inturn I guess leaves me asking advice. For the time being I can still watch my DVD's on my computer so it isn't that big of a deal, it isn't like I have to go get a new one right now. The part that I find sucks the most is the fact that it was a 5 disk DVD player that was also one of those little home theatre systems in a box. I rather am missing the fact that I could put five CD's in there and listen to my tunes with out changing disks much especially if I had MP3 burned CD's in there.

So I see a couple of options here. Not being the biggest tech person out there though I thought I would run some thoughts and ideas past everyone to weigh the pro and cons or perhaps get some better ideas on what to do about the situation.

First I could do nothing. The plus side is it would cost me nothing. I don’t have as big a budget as I used to so this has some appeal to me. As it stands now I am managing fine using my computer to listen to my tunes and watch movies. The minus side is the sound quality on my computer leaves a lot to be desired. It is also better to watch movies on the old TV than the computer.

I figure if I wanted to I could just go buy another DVD player. I looked a bit at the local best buy the other day and you can get one cheap, real cheap these days. It wouldn’t be as nice as my old one though and would be single disk.

Another thought that has crossed my mind is I could up grade to a blue-ray player. This is something I had thought about doing even before my DVD player kicked the bucket. I did a bit of looking on amazon a while back to see if someone makes a region free blue-ray player as that would be what I would like. Such a product does indeed exist. After that same trip to the local best buy though it is obvious to me that to get a region free one would be quite a bit more expensive than a regular Blue-Ray player or a bare bones DVD player. I could afford one if I decide to go that route though.

I don’t know a whole lot about Blue-Ray players though. Would I be correct in assuming that they play regular DVD’s as well as the newer Blue-Ray discs? I would hate to go buy a Blue-Ray player than have to replace all my DVD’s. That would just be dumb. Is there anything on the horizon that is going to make a blue-ray player obsolete anytime soon? It would be dumb to go buy a Blue-Ray player only to have them stop making the stupid disks in the near future.

I guess the down side as I see it to going the Blue-Ray player is the cost. As well there is the fact that it is only one disk, though the ones I have looked at have a USB port to run music off so I don’t think that is a big deal. If I had not recently been given someones old amplifier it also would have sucked to have lost the home theatre capability that I had with my old DVD player. That shouldn't be a problem now though with that old amp.

The one thing that I really wonder about though is would a new blue-ray player work with my old TV? Looking at the picture of the back of this thing it doesn’t appear to have the old red, yellow and, white cables or the other red, blue, and, green ones. It looks to me that it uses something called HDMI. I don’t know exactly what that is but, it looks to me that it won’t connect to my old TV.

If that is the case then if I decided to go get a blue-ray player it looks like I would need to get a new TV too, correct? If so I think I will rule this route out as I don’t think I want to spend the money for a new Blue-Ray player and TV. Especially considering that my TV I regard as one of the biggest wastes of money ever. What does a new TV run these days anyways?

The other thought that has crossed my mind is just getting a new laptop. The fact of the matter is my old laptop here is showing its age. I need to replace it one of these days before it also kicks the bucket. Reality is I use my computer far more than I ever use a TV. It would seem to me that if I get a new laptop I could keep going like I am now and not worry about spending money on a new DVD or blue-ray player and possibly a new TV as well. While I haven’t priced new laptops it would seem to me that this would almost be cheaper especially when I consider the fact that I will probably end up replacing the current laptop sometime in the near future. Another decided bonus is if I got a new laptop I could finally get some new computer games to play. There are some other there that I would like to play that I can’t right now because my computer is old. I guess though one question I had is does anyone here know if the blue-ray players that come in laptops are region free? Or do they only play region one disks?

The last thing that has crossed my mind was just going out and buying a CD player and save my money for a new laptop. While I was at the best buy the other day I did see a CD player that I liked the looks of. It was a 300 disk player which is probably over kill as I doubt that I have 300 CD’s. It was however $200 bucks or so, which while not cheap is probably a bit less than the Blue-ray players I was looking at. It would save me the worry about needing a new TV. I could just buy this CD player then listen to my tunes on that which is what I am missing more anyways than the lack of watching movies on my TV.

Anyways those are the ideas I am kicking around in my head. Any thoughts or other ideas?

I use my Playstation 3 as a blue ray player,  also for Netflix.  You should be able to get one of those really cheap when the PS4 comes out in a month or two.

That is something I hadn't considered. Does the stupid X-box also play Blue-ray disks? The reason I ask is I know a bunch of guys that have X-boxes and have been bugging my to get one for years so I can play games with them.

X box 360 only does DVD,  PS3 does both.     I don't know what the new systems wll be,  but I assume they will both be blue ray when they come out for Christmas.

The new XBox One will do Blu-Ray as well as DVD. The current XBox 360 plays DVD but not Blu-Ray.

We were in the same situation a few years ago as our home theatre DVD lunched itself so we started using the Xbox as our DVD player and started streaming music over our wifi network through it. Heck, I probably haven't used a physical CD in a couple of years after ripping them to our PC.

One thing I heard from my local UPS store - they shipped LOADS of BrokeBoxes back to the repair center.  They rarely saw PS3's.  That would have been my deciding factor, as well as Blu-Ray.

Even now, though, I have a DVD/VHS player, because I am NOT paying for TIVO.

I haven't even considered getting a Blu-ray player.  Any legacy DVD's I have, I watch on the X-box, and any new movies I download or get from Netflix.  Music on X-box also.  Wouldn't buy a new one now though.  I see them used on kijiji for $80-100.

I faced similar dilemma...our DVD player was dieing, non of the buttons on the unit worked only the remote.  No Big just have to remember to eject before getting off the couch.
Then I went looking for Star Wars on DVD :shocked.  It was $100 less on blue ray for all six than the original three on DVD.  So I bought a $80 Blue Ray player and was money ahead.  Yes I already had Star Wars, but it is on VHS the original releases not the new updated ones.  But my VHS did not make the move out west after I got married, and I left them at my parents house.
We have a Wii, my wife bought it for the Wii Fit, and for non-violent kids games, and the Lego games are about my speed...
I never even tried it as a DVD player.

Now the Wii is a good idea I hadn't thought of. I find that thing very fun. Generally speaking I don't care for video game consoles, the wii is the exception.

I recently purchased a Craig DVD/JPEG/CD-R/CD-RW/CD player compatible from the CVS pharmacy in town. I had a 25% off coupon, so I used it. If I recall, retail was $35 before discount.

Understand I rarely watch TV, still I do like to watch a movie from time to time. While I can watch a DVD through my laptop, or a small portable DVD player, it is nice to view on a 27" Diagonal screen on a old Sylvania Console TV here on the farm.

Now it seems the converter box has played out, so I can't watch TV if I wanted to. Still working on this new glitch.

Just for me, not being all up to date with all the new tech, this works fine for me.
