Yugo M70 O-PAP AK 2 magazines $529 at Aim Surplus
« on: November 15, 2013, 06:03:02 PM »
Bought one today on a "whim"....seems like a good dal and it's been a while since I had an AK

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1CAKO-PAP

I know it's a bit of putting the cart before the horse, but anyone have an hands on with these?  From what I have read they are supposedly pretty beefy and I think I did good.

They are beefy, and generally regarded as decent. It will probably be a trifle nose heavy.

OK, a trifle nose-heavier than your standard AK, which tends to already be a trifle nose-heavy. Still, not bad, and the receiver is solid. The pistol grip is actually pretty comfortable.

I own an underfolder variant of that rifle. It's more accurate than my SAR-1.

A year or two ago I got a Yugo underfolder for the truck.  I've been happy with it.

Pick up a Wilson tennis racket bag for it. It fits perfectly.

I bought one a month ago from J&G Sales....Nice gun, straight, etc.   I didn't care for the special siderail (PSL style rail not standard AK. you have to mill a "notch" in a standard AK mount to get it to fit and it sits higher).   It also shot just "okay"....most of my AK's will do 3". I've only had one do worse and I sold it.

Well this one would put 4 rounds into 2.5" and ALWAYS two more opening it up to 4.5".

I sold it and bought a AES-10B RPK without the bipod......IT is a malfing POS and Century Arms is going to do warrenty work on ti.

Rifle came in yesterday yo my ffl....looks and feels solid as expected...bit more mag wobble than I like but I can work on that later.....wood seems new but is dirty and smells dusty/musty....like an old Army canvas tent.   I got "lucky" I guess and git a buttstick with the Serbian crest burned into it snd dont want yo cover it up....what woukd be a good finish to seal in the smell, protect the wood and still allow most of the natural wood grain and that crest to come through....tung oil?

Also that grip is being switched out...posdibly for the Magpul AK grip....

I've only ever used tung oil, boiled linseed oil, and TruOil.  All have yielded good results (at least for my amateur jobs).  I have no idea, though, what would be good at curing your smell problem.  I'm curious to know what you end up using and if you are successful.

Fussy thing I am doing is what I call the kitty litter lasagna. ..badically burrying the wood in in an aluminum pan filed with cat litter and sticking it in a 140-160 degree oven to sweat or any grease  or oil in it.   In the Summer I just put entire stocks in black yard waste bags in direct sunlight with cat litter and it does wonders for getting cosmoline out of wood.

Then clean it with a mild degreaser and let it dry and see how it looks.

I think most of it is just the normal machine oil that tgey put on these to ship from the factory soaked into surplus "new" stocks that have been sitting in some damp warehouse for a while, hence the musty smell.  I think pretty much anything will cover up the smell,  but my normal practice involves miniwax maple polyurethane and I figured there had to be a better option.
Think I will get some tru oil and give it a shot. ...do you think it's better tgan tung oil or visa versa?

I have only limited experience with refinishing stocks.  The times I've used it, Tru-Oil has given a duller finish of the two.  Tung oil seems to be able yield a brighter sheen and bring out the grain better than Tru-Oil.

I bet there are some folks on the forum a lot more skilled than I at refinishing wood.  Anyone else care to chime in?

Tung oil does give a bit more sheen.  Boiled Linseed oil seems like it soaks in deeper.  Watkins oil is a nice hand rubbed oil finish if you want to change colors.  I have not used it on gun stocks, but quite a bit on other wood working projects.  I love hand rubbed oil finishes, as they get a nice patina, and if they get scuffed or dinged you just rub in a little bit more.

All of these finishes are very flammable.  Do not stuff them wadded up in a tight place unless it is sealed.  A guy I know was mixing boiled linseed oil and Watkins oil, and then heating this mix up on a hot plate to get it to sink in deeper. DO NOT DO THIS.  The heating part.  It will catch fire very easily.  Beautiful timber frame ceiling up in smoke and third degree burns on the guy applying the oil mix.

Also be sure to lay the oil rag out flat, rather than ball it up.  Preferably put it outside.  Preferably in water.

Nice! Does it  have a hinged top cover? Is its muzzle device removable?

Negative on the hinged cover but the slant muzzle brake is removable and is one of the 922r parts CAI pits on it to import and sell them in the US
