I love it too.  Nearly twenty years ago I had an opportunity to buy a Browning 1886, a Miroku made copy (I suspect they make the modern Winchester 1886) which did not have that tang safety (not as bad as a crossbolt safety, admittedly) but unfortunatly was unable to complete the deal.
I'd still like to pick up one of these new ones but the price is now considerably greater. :banghead  Oh well.

This new Winchester is of course also made in Japan... and has the safety on the tang to meet importation.  And it is better than an ugly Cross Bolt safety... 
The gun remains gorgeous.  And it's smooth and well rounded... the gun is a work of art and the price is not unreasonable for what your getting these days.  SMOKES a Marlin or Rossi all to hell. 
Would I trade my Marlin for one?  If I had such as offer - Oh Hell Yes.

I do have the Browning B-92 in .44 magnum, also a Miroku, and they are certainly MUCH superior to the Rossi equivelents. That was made prior to the stupid safety. 
The tang safety wouldn't be a deal breaker for me....I just think it's sort of silly on a lever action is all.

   This imported 1886 has the original non-rebounding half cock hammer and solid tang design.

    If I am not mistaken the import safety requirements only apply to handguns.

Does the safety prevent the mounting of a flip up sight on the tang?

Indeed, for those who so desire or need, the .45 Government round can fling a deer flattening 405 grains of lead at the gentle and quiet speed of just 1000 fps with a case filling charge of Trail Boss powder.

 Bulky is the word!  Twelve to thirteen, (12 to 13), grains in the 45-70 with 405 gr. lead bullets.

Back on topic though, that is one nice looking rifle George profiled for us.  The period buttstock looks a bit unforgiving for heavy loads but what the hell, its a Winchester.   :cool
