S&W M&P AR-10 - thoughts?
« on: April 04, 2013, 08:34:01 PM »
Was curious to see what opinions are of the relatively new Smith & Wesson M&P AR-10 - has anyone picked one up or put some rounds through it?

I haven't seen one in person yet.  But one sold local here in Redding Ca for $1,632 so they are at least out there and reasonable.  The gun shop owner said they were really solid and he was surprised by the fit and finish.  (BUT I don't know this owner well so take that with a grain of salt).
Yes I live in California.  Please dont hold that against me.

Interesting Ambi set up they have.  Light weight.  But reported by my customer to be lack luster in accuracy and had reliability issues out of the box.
Its Meh.

Well I'll wait for more than just a handfull of reports before I'll get an opinion on it right now because I've got 6 people telling me 3 different things either it's awesome, meh, or horrible. Maybe it's because it's a brand new design for them. btw the count is 3 awesome, 2 meh, and 1 horrible.

The AR-10 is a funny beast. It's not nearly as standardized as the AR-15 is, it's not quite as tolerant of ammunition variations, and up until recently it was scarce on the civilian market...

So I'm waiting and seeing how this turns out. The M&P-10 is entering the pricepoint arena occupied previously by only Armalite (meh with a dose of funky mags up until recently) and DPMS (ick).
I don't THINK I'll ever have to face down routers in the streets.

I should hope not. Mobs of rogue woodworking tools would suck to repel.

You've obviously not ran a Broadsword.

Apples to oranges in this case. Comparing a $1500ish mass produced rifle to one that costs nearly twice as much and is hand built are two very different things.

My assesment of AR 10s in general still stands.

1800 starting out.  Only 300 bucks more.  Not a gigantic difference in price, but a megalithic difference in what you get.
Most production AR-10's though are disappointing.
SIG has the best one I think, but it's more money, and again... You could get a Broadsword for only about 200 bucks more.

You must not seen the new pricing on CW's website...  In February or March, prices shot up substantially.  One week they were lower, and the next week they weren't...  :shrug

I went ahead and got it - I'd much rather have a broadsword, but in CA they WILL be banned soon, and with GunDoc's backlog, I don't know that I'd get it in time to beat the ban.  Hate to be a panic-buyer, but knowing I planned on getting an AR in .308, when I came across one, that had three people in line ahead of me that wanted it, when they buyers ahead of me fell through, I just had to grab it.

I figure I can - over time - fix it up, maybe send it to GunDoc for "Crusaderizing", but at least I got it now while I have the chance.

My dealer has some of these for about 1200. They seem light compared to the Bushmaster and DPMS AR10s.

here in CA they're a little harder to come by - and a bit more expensive.

In the AR platform, most of the magic is in the upper. Not sure about Kali, but other places the upper is just the upper. Pull two pins, replace S&W upper with Crusader upper. Done.

That's  a good plan.  You can probably even sell your existing upper to defray the cost when you are ready.

Good thought.  Hmmm, might need to make a call to GunDoc!   :D

Yeah, assuming no Kali-specific legal shenanigans, owning a Kali-legal AR-10 lower gets your foot in the door and should enable you to do almost anything that is standard with the platform.
