I have three 742's and an earlier version 740. All date to the 60's to early '70s. '06, .308 and .280. Have deer hunted with all of them. None have ever needed replacement parts or other than routine maintenance, cleaning and lube.
Frankly, I didn't know they were still in Remington's catalog. I thought they were superseded by the 7400.
They are 2 MOA hunting rifles and serve well. They do not adapt to trying to turn them into tactical rifles, as they are not intended to shoot high round count service. I inherited the 740. It's the only one to ever malfunction. It has a tendency for the rotary bolt to not quite lock into battery. You sometimes have to push forward on the bolt handle, like an AR forward assist.
My favorite, and one I still use regularly, is the .280 with a its period correct Redfield 2-7x scope. It's a great fast handling woods gun for stalking and jumping deer in timber or shots at running game where quick follow up is useful. But I can still make the long shot when needed. It's as accurate as many field grade bolt guns.
