Remington 742 Gone.
« on: January 17, 2017, 01:15:23 pm »
The iconic Remington 742 autoloading centerfire rifle is missing from the 2017 catalog.

The 760 pump action centerfire continues to hang on, apparently for those states that don't allow semi-automatic deer rifles in the hunting field.

That self destructing design needed to die. No loss here.

I liked my old 760. never shot the 742. I wouldn't buy the new 760's though. the old ones were much prettier

Never fired one, but I saw a handful pass through the range/gun shop I used to frequent back in the Philly area. Even from across the counter, they looked like cheap pieces of junk that would fall apart if you breathed on them too hard. Can't say I'm sad to see them go.

I have three 742's and an earlier version 740.  All date to the 60's to early '70s.  '06, .308 and .280.  Have deer hunted with all of them.  None have ever needed replacement parts or other than routine maintenance, cleaning and lube.

Frankly, I didn't know they were still in Remington's catalog.  I thought they were superseded by the 7400.

They are 2 MOA hunting rifles and serve well.  They do not adapt to trying to turn them into tactical rifles, as they are not intended to shoot high round count service.  I inherited the 740.  It's the only one to ever malfunction.  It has a tendency for the rotary bolt to not quite lock into battery.  You sometimes have to push forward on the bolt handle, like an AR forward assist.

My favorite, and one I still use regularly, is the .280 with a its period correct Redfield 2-7x scope.  It's a great fast handling woods gun for stalking and jumping deer in timber or shots at running game where quick follow up is useful.  But I can still make the long shot when needed.  It's as accurate as many field grade bolt guns.

You are correct, it is the model 7400 autoloader that is now gone from the Remington line.  The 7600 pump action is still in the product line.

Big Green used to make some decent guns.  Sadly, QC has gone to the dogs.

Here is one of those 742's.  I can't tell from the picture alone if this was the one in .280 or .308.  Both had Redfield 2-7x scopes and are otherwise externally identical.   The other two are '06.  One of them is the older 740 the other is a nicer 742 BDL with better wood and a cheekpiece rear stock.  It has a Leupold 3-9x40.

Oy. I was thinking of the Model 597 in .22 LR.  It looks like I can't brain anymore. I think I'm going to stay off the internets until I can brain again.

I thought the 750 replaced the 7400 many years ago. I had a 750 Carbine 35 Whelen for several years. What a shooter! Wish I'd kept that one.
