Q: Rem 700 Detachable Box Magazine Modification?
« on: August 31, 2009, 03:55:55 pm »
I really do love my Rem 700 XCR Compact Tactical.  But I want to use a detachable box magazine.  With my same stock.
TacticalRifles.net has one for 350 bucks (350?WTF is it made of GOLD?) and then you have to have a gunsmith mod your stock to get it to fit.
Is there another one out there that doesn't cost that much?

George I was looking into CDI Precision Gunworks.  I want to say with a 10rd mag and the work done BY the guy who created it, it's right at 300.
Their number is 941-961-3185.  Guy is super nice (I think his name is Jeff).  Turn around time is about two weeks IIRC.

    Am I missing something?
If it costs this much to convert, why not buy another rifle that uses detachables?
We can always use another one - different caliber, shorter or longer barrel, 'etc, 'etc.
This sounds like as good an excuse as any.

It sounds like George really likes his XCR - except for the one issue of wanting a detachable magazine. Looking at Remington's website, I don't even see anything with detachable mags as a factory feature.

Most factory detachable gear is crap and uses badly made magazines.  that seems to be the high and low of it, plus the magazine capacity is lacking.  The rifle I'm looking at doing this to is an FN PRB or something like that.  And even though a detachable magazine is an option with this rifle the mags are only 4rds and not very much quality in my understanding.

This is something I looked into doing for my Rem 700 in 308.  I found a lot of information at the forums at snipershide.com and snipercentral.com.  Dont know your caliber, so you may be a lot more limited than what I've looked into.  Regretfully, they're all pretty much in the same price range.

Some of the manufacturers are Badger, Seekins, Surgeon, V-Bull Precision, CDI, and of course HS Precision.

Basically, except for the HS precision ones, all of them seem to be pretty good quality.  The HS negatives seem to be more based on preconceptions from someone elses comments, not actual first hand experience, so I'm not sure how much I believe those.  Compared to the others, the HS one does look a bit on the flimsy side though...

The biggest difference between them seems to be the magazine they use, as some use an AI mag (about $70 each), and some use their own mag.

I dont know why, but for some reason I always go back to the Badger one when looking at it.  Maybe its just because they're a bigger company or their bolt knob is so popular, or something else.  No clue.  The HS does seem to support the biggest range of calibers, as well as both long and short action rifles.  I think it might come down to just the type of mag release you want.

Some links to to the manufacturers sites.

I just purchased a FN SPR action and CDI bottom metal last week.  I received the CDI bottom metal in the mail today, and was able to take a few pictures of it.  I'm not sure how it will fit on the Remington 700.  For the SPR, the action will need to be milled out a slight bit to allow the magazine to fully mate with the receiver, since the FN-supplied magazines are a bit shorter front to back than the AICS magazines.

AICS mag too wide for action

IIRC Duane Thomas (I think, it's been a few years) gun writer, body guard, etc, had a Sako 5.56 mod'd to take AR mags without issues. Sounds darned good to me!
