NEW! SIG Sauer SIG716
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:46:40 pm »
Fresh from The Firearm Blog.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/02/02/sig-sauer-sig716-rifle/

Quote
The SIG 716 is the new piston operated 7.62x51mm / .308 Win. rifle from Sig Sauer.

The rifle will be offered in four configurations:

    * Tactical Patrol (12.5" barrel, almost certainly only on offer to law enforcement and military)
    * Patrol (16" barrel)
    * Precision Marksman (16" barrel)
    * Precision Sniper (20" barrel)

Every model is equipped with free-floating quad rail and chrome-lined barrels. The Marksmen models feature heavy match barrels. The non-marksmen models come with backup iron sights. The 517 makes use of Armalite's AR-10 Gen II magazine.

According to pizzigr1 at AR15.com, Sig are using Armalite AR-10 Bolt Carrier Groups (BCG).

No word on pricing or availability.

      Brilliant, don't use a platform that can take advantage of the new .308 PMAG.  Another win for SIG!

    Someone want to educate me regarding 308 rifles and magazines?

    This is an AR-10 right?  What rifle is the 308Pmag configured for?

      2 types of .308 AR mags.  Armalite and Stoner/Sr25 (this is the PMag pattern as well).

    To clarify, the AR-10 from Armalite uses modified M-14 mags. Everyone else uses the Stoner mags. And I agree with LL. Dumb move on SIG's part.

    The only 20 rounders I buy for Black Sunshine will be P-Mags. For 25 rounds I'm going with POF. Here's to hoping that the P-Mags will also be available in 25 rounds down the road.

    I really get a kick out of how silly these model number can be,  The 556 was a combination of the classic 550 model number and the caliber.  Then the 516 was some kind of mish-mash of the caliber and M16...because HK had already beaten them to the M4+M16...416.

    Now this is a 716...because it is AR-based like the 516 bit in 7.62 caliber...but with HK they changed the last number and make it 417 for their 7.62mm guns...just like the SCAR which comes in SCAR16 (in 5.56...just like the M16) and in 7.62 it is the SCAR17...which is stealing from HK's playbook.

    My head hurts... :facepalm

    I don't think guns should have numbers or acronyms. They should be like cars and have cool names.  Like the Colt Dragoon.  Come on, would you rather have a 6920 or a Death-Striker. Would you rather have a 5906 or a Doombringer?  Yeah... this marketing stuff is easy.

    This should be the Sig Ninja-Bloodbath.

    For my CCW piece, I'll take a 1911 or a P228 or whatever.

    For my "having-fun-at-the-range piece, I'll take a Doombringer or a Dragoon.

    I am biased since I already have an Armalite, But I am interested to see how this does, especially since it is a piston.  I am also glad another big name is running with that version.
    While it is unfortunate that there are no Pmags, Armalite is running group sales on mags that end up being fairly decent.  I have also herd that the Gen II mags are really good.  They also come in 5, 10, 15,20, and 25 round versions.  Hopefully at some point, Magpul comes out with an Armalite compliant version, but until then, the Gen II mags will work fine.
    It is also not like Armalite is some small nitch player in the 308AR world.

    This should be the Sig Ninja-Bloodbath.

    It's all about how the company wants the product recognized. If you want the product recognized, you give it a name. Kind of like the Crusader guys didn't name their lube "Crusader L69." They wanted it recognized as its own product, so they called it Slipstream.
    However, a company like Sig wants people out there saying " I shoot a Sig," not "I shoot a P226 Elite Combat Platinum Compact Ninja." They want the brand recognized before the specific model, and it's much easier to say the former than the latter.

    You'll notice the same thing with cars. A Mustang owner will say he drives a Mustang, not a Ford. A Mercedes CL550 owner will just say he drives a Benz.

    One word: Thundercougarfalconbird.

    I was all excited when I saw this.  "Sweet!" I exclaimed.  "Sig is making an Americanized Sig 750 series rifle!"  (The 750 series is the Sig 550 series scaled up to .308 Winchester.)

    But no-o-o.  They're making a piston-op AR-10 clone that takes the most expensive .308 mags on the market (well, maybe Chinese SVD mags, or original Beretta BM-59 magazines cost more.  And the FNAR's mags are like seventy bucks a piece.  But you get my point.)

    BAD Sig.  BAD.  You're going out in the yard, and you're not coming back in until I get a .308 Sig 556 Classic.   :bash

    Ah....you do know the Sig 556 was called that because it's 5.56mm. .....  right? :nervous

    They'd have to call it the Sig 308. :facepalm

    Because it is based on the AR platform and not the SIG 7xx platform - so they had to use the x16 model number since "16" means "AR"... :facepalm

    I really like Sigs and Fords. I have three of each. What I want to know is, where can I get a ThunderCougarFalconBird? Or maybe an f-350scursionstang? That would be cool. Or a .308 chambered P226? Would that be a P308? :hide
    Its nice to see sig working hard to feed the American gun owner. Who cares if they dont get it all right? Look at H&K or even Colts views on arming the masses. Screw those guys.  Keep up the good work sig!

    FWIW - heard on SigForum that there have been rumblings coming from Sig with a reinvention of the 308 rifle platform.  What that means exactly?   :shrug

    I emailed them and gave them hell for NOT delivering an American version of the SAPR that accepts the PMAGs when this thread first kicked off.  I let them know as a consumer that mags are a big deal for me (I'd have never bought a 550 that takes 550 mags - too expensive).  And I know that I'm not the only one.  Here's hoping SOMETHING changes.  I'd love to be able to pick one up so I wouldn't feel inadequate next to T's DPMS tackdriver or DMG's Mini-Windrunner.
