Mossberg MVP Patrol .308. So much want.
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:24:06 PM »
We all know the Mossberg MVP in .223 right? Cute little bolt action set up to use AR magazines. I happen to know first hand what a trick it was to make a bolt action feed from a detachable staggered feed magazine, unlike all the bolt actions out there using (expensive) center feed AICS mags.

Now they seem to have taken the next obvious step (though they don't list it on their website yet) and did the same thing with a .308 using M14/.308 PMag magazines. I heard a number of rumors that this is what Ruger intended to do with their Gunsite Scout, but they couldn't make it work.

http://www.rifleshootermag.com/2013/01/29/everyman-rifle-mossberg-mvp-in-7-62-review/

Better still, it looks like they're doing one with a 16" threaded barrel and iron sights:

Best of all, the MSRP is only $681, which means if they're ever available they might sell down in the $550 range.

I want one of these so bad. :drool

How can it use both M-14 mags and P-mags?

The M-14 catch is on the rear; and the P-mag is on the side.
(DPMS and SR-25 mags also catch on the side.)

Or does the gun itself have some way to accommodate both?

Whoops, you're correct. SR25 Mags only.

Even so .   .   .  that's a nice looking little rifle.   If it works as good as it looks they should sell a trainload of those.   I wouldn't mind seeing the .223 version add to the caliber lineup with a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC.     :D

Yes please. It would be nice to pop out a 300 whisper/blackout in that lineup as well.

Maybe a 338 Federal in the 308 version...

They made a .223 / 5.56 version of this and I am full of want for both the 5.56 and 7.62 rifles!

Oh man. This rifle with a Leupold vxr scope... That would make a pretty sweet all around rifle. I think Colonel Cooper would approve.

I want one in 7mm-08. .338 Federal would be cool too.

Of course you do  ;)

If I were after something other than a vanilla .30 cal; I'd go a bit further to the extremes and take a .260 Rem or a .358 Win.

There is someone who makes a Scout-ish .300 BK bolty, but I'm blanking as to who it is... there's a thread about it on here. Looked pretty nice.

I would not be pouting if I had either one of those myself as I'm fond of both. The .358 especially in a short barrel. For a .260 or .243 I'd want at least an 18" barrel. 20" max for a rifle of this kind.

That's a good looking rifle.  It's one you kinda got me excited for.  But do I really need more than one .308 bolt action? Of course!

I've already got bolt actions in .30-06 (2), .30-40 Krag, 7.62x54R, and .308. And that's just the .30 calibers  :confused

I still want this one.  :facepalm

Did I read that these are based off of a Savage type action?
Wonder what barrels are compatible with them...

I kinda doubt you could just drop in a Savage barrel, but it might not take much machining to make one work.

What other desired cartridges would fit in a .308 length magazine?

Seriously, I'm asking cuz I wanna know.

The whole .308 Family runs:

.22 Cheetah (wildcat)
.243 Winchester
.260 Remington
.270-08 (wildcat)
7mm-08 Remington
.308 Winchester
.338 Federal
.358 Winchester

Other rounds with the same bolt head and short enough to fit the action would include:
.45 ACP
.44 Automag
.22-250 Remington
6mm Remington
.257 Roberts (depending on bullet length and seating depth)

And probably hundreds of others I'm not thinking of.

My LGS hadn't heard of it until I asked today, but the owner checked his Mossberg dealer site and apparently they are listing the regular .223 model along with two 7.62 variants (threaded and non-threaded barrels), and yes, they are showing a .300 BLK model as well. I'm pretty good friends with the owner and it didn't take much to talk him into reserving a 7.62 model for the shelves...so I'll get to play with/adopt one when it shows up.

Only thing I can find the MVP chambered in on their website is 5.56/.223...  :-\

There is video of an MVP .300 BLK though, so maybe the used market...

All I know is...I asked, he hadn't heard of it, and I watched him look for and find the models I mentioned on his shop computer. Don't know anything about the Mossberg dealer network, but they were on there.
