What all calibers can H335 and Varget be used in?
« on: May 08, 2009, 03:57:52 pm »
Okay, so i have like 10 pounds of H335, and a place that ACTUALLY has varget in.    So, i am wondering what all calibers i can use these powders for?   I know H335 there is .223, some .308 loads*, .30-30 win i have heard 7.62x39, and so on.      Although, i am still looking for primers like everyone else....

*Does this mean i can load .308 based cartridges with it too, like the 7mm-08 and .243?    That would be REALLY helpful.

Thanks all!

Yes, you can use the Varget for .308, I do it all the time, I assume therefore that the 308 derivatives probably will work. You could go to the Hodgdon website and see.

    H355 I don't know so well.

I assume you meant H335 rather than H355?

I use Varget for .308 and .223 with good results.

Varget works very well in anything that has a case capacity between 223 and 308.  Some even use it in 30-06.

H335 works in both 223 and 30-30 VERY well, IME.  Particularly accurate at a max charge under a 150 sierra in several win 94s chambered in 30-30 that I've tried it in.  Meters easily to boot.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty. . . . The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction- St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

Anyone know if there are any loads using heavy (130-140gr class) bullets in the .260 rem, using H335?      I have only found some that use light 90gr class bullets.

To answer the one of the original questions, I used Varget quit a bit for .243 varmint loads. I used it both for the Sierra 60-grain HP and the 65-grain V-Max, don't remember the exact charge weights for either but I do remember the 60-grain Sierra shot best a little under maximum, so good in fact (tiny one-hole groups at 100-yards) that I pretty much shot the entire can of Varget and I don't remember how many of those Sierras' over several years of the .243 being my main varmint gun.

->> I went and found my load books and looked it up. Winchester cases neck sized in a RCBS neck sizing die, CCI large rifle benchrest primers, 41-grains of Varget under the Sierra 60-grain .243 HP for about 3700 fps out of my Winchester model 70 .243.
Not much more than a good 22/250 can do, but it was so accurate I didn't want much more. :clap

I later tried Varget for the 55-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip (Trying to break the 4000fps barrier of awesomeness), but H380 shot much better out of my rifle. I tried Varget for some 7mm08 loads too, but found H4350 to far better for the 139-grain bullet (Hornady) I like for deer.

It can give you the list you're looking for.  Go to Hodgdon's reloading center and get to the .223 page.  You will see other selector boxes across the top to narrow the search. One of these is powder.  Select H335 from the drop-down, then click search again.  This will give you a list of .223 loadings only using H335.  NOW, when you use the pull-down menu for cartridge selection, only those cartridges having a loading for H335 will be listed.
