.223 Load with 75 gr. HPBT Match
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:25:08 AM »
Does 23 grains of IMR 4895 sound like an accurate charge for the 75 grain bullet.  I'm shooting a match and I need something for 600 yards.

Thanks

Not off the top of my head... maybe with 3031... I don't know... I've not reloaded small bore for too long to remember.

You cannot ask us if it is accurate, as we don't have your rifle...it may be super accurate in mine, and pattern rather than group in yours.

My Hornady manual only lists H 4895, and 23.3gr is the MAX load.  As a rule of thumb though, max accuracy won't be found at the max velocitys. There are exceptions to this rule.

It is a safe charge, yes.  But accuracy in your rifle will depend on seating depth, rate of twist etc.  The only way to know is load some and try it out.

Were it me, I'd load 10 each at 1/2 grain intervals from 21 to 23, shoot them for group, and then start adjusting seating depth on the one that grouped best out of the initial tests.
This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty...
