Had a customer once that needed forged parts for a warplane reconstruction project. I had an old, burnt (saved from a scrap smelter) left side piece to rev-engy and make forging dies for a left+right piece and tooling. When they were done, I got to see the finished, milled, product. I think the whole run was 32 pieces plus proofs (or less).
A few months later, I saw an article about a different guy reconstructing old warplanes using milled billet stock.
Yeah, that's OEM.
I know which plane I'd rather fly in. There's apparently good money in the reconstructing biz, for TONS of work and research and a bit of danger. I like the new jets and toys and whatnot...they'll just never match the Mustangs and Corsairs, to me, for sheer awesome.
