The Long Dark (bring a sweater)
« on: December 28, 2014, 01:47:21 PM »
Back in 2011, DayZ hit the scene, and it spawned an entire genre of survival games.  Many of them were straight-up clones of DayZ, like the ill-fated War Z and the upcoming H1Z1 from Sony Online Entertainment (which I am immensely looking forward to).

Others, like Rust, strayed from the mold.  Rust focuses primarily on crafting and building, for example.  You start off naked, equipped with only a rock.

The Long Dark is another game in this genre.  Unlike some others, it not only lacks zombies or monsters of any kind, it's also single player only.  It's just you, all by your lonesome, against the elements in Canada.  The cold is your biggest enemy.

Quote
How Far Will You Go to Survive? Imagine the lights go out, never to return. Bright aurora flare across the sky, and all humanity’s technological might is laid to waste, neutralized in a kind of quiet apocalypse. Everything that has shielded humanity from the disinterested power of Mother Nature is suddenly wrenched from us, dropping us a few links down the food chain. Food and water are scarce. The roads are no longer safe. And winter approaches… Welcome to The Long Dark —an immersive survival simulation set in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. Experience a unique first-person survival simulation that will force you to think and push you to your limits with its thought-provoking gameplay and mature storytelling.

It shows that nature itself can be an oppressive enough of of an opponent.  This is, of course, dependent on the setting.  Survival would be much less of a struggle in an identical game set in someplace more temperate, that had been more populated (allowing for easier scavenging).

I've been playing it a little bit.  It's different, very lonely.  There are no immediate threats, usually, like zombies chasing you or other players sniping you from a couple hundred yards.  It's just the oppressive cold and the knowledge that, sooner or later, it will kill you.

I also love the painted-looking art style.  It's beautiful while being easy on your system; don't need anything close to a top-end machine to run this game.

It doesn't have one huge open world, like some of these games do.  It's made up of smaller maps that have interconnection points, ala STALKER.  The upside to this is that the developers can continually add maps to expand the game world, and making the playable world larger won't boost the system requirements.

Have I mentioned that I love the art style?  Instead of needlessly aiming for photorealism, it instead sets a tone.  I think it's beautiful while still being bleak.  (I also love the very high frame rate I get.)

I'd like to see a survival game like this available with a multiplayer option.  I don't know about multiplayer-only like DayZ; it ends up turning into a giant deathmatch, and if your internet connection is being wonky or the servers are down for maintenance, you can't play.  Perhaps a game that can be played single player, and with drop in/drop out co-op like Borderlands.  Or, you could mix it up, and allow your game to be accessed by online players, meaning that without warning, a random guy could show up and ruin your day.  They'd be less predictable than computer-controlled NPCs, but you could shut them out if you didn't want to bother.

The best part?  The Long Dark is, right now, on sale on Steam.  You can snag it for ten bucks.  Normal price is $19.99 USD.

In my first play attempt, I survived 22 in-game hours before being mauled to death by a wolf.

If not, at least it's a Steam game.  It's yours forever.

I got uber lucky finding 12 rounds for the Enfield rifle, and I proceeded to make myself a nice wolf coat. Then I fell off a cliff running from a wolf broke my leg and couldn't hobble to safety before I froze to death at night.

10/10 would die in wolf coat again.

See, I'm torn on what to do.

I enjoy consoles. I'm a Playstation fan and want a PS4. There are numerous games being released that I really want to play. Then you have computer gaming. I don't have a computer that can handle any of the new generation of games and there are quite a few of those I want to play as well.

I guess I should just bite the bullet, save the money and buy both a PS4 and a decent computer for gaming. Games like this make me wish I had a better laptop or a desktop.

This looks really good! On my small cell phone screen I only watched the v log vid you posted without realising it was a parody. Before the dog came up, I was like "My God how graphics have improved!"  :doh.

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

One of the nice things about this game is that you can run it on an older PC with the graphics quality set low and the resolution way down but you don't really lose anything in the way of gameplay or the overall quality of the experience.

I started off playing in the easy mode - went 3 weeks and basically would have had to make a real effort to die. Next time around I did the hard mode and made it 1 day 19 hours and 30 minutes before the dam wolf killed me.

The trapper's cabin is always loaded with stuff on the mystery lake map. It also has the crafting table+woodstove combo to make a great base of operations.

You know what my favorite thing is?

Changing a tire in the dark in -22.  Not because it's a blown out, but because it's been sitting too long in the cold.  And you don't know until you are 40 minutes down a s___ty country road.

fluff the wolves, don't mess with the guy changing the tire.

He will fluffing kill you. Eat you alive and screaming.

Well, obviously that wouldn't happen if you'd put winter air in your tires.  ::)
