I'll admit, my distaste for the zombie genre has rendered this game unappealing to me from the get go, but this kind of s___ makes it even more so:

I can't help but be some approximation of myself in games no matter how much I try not to be. Thus far in dayz I've only killed one person trying to kill me mostly civil other than zombies.

Eh. We do what we do. Sometimes we're bandits sometimes we hunt bandits.

We were just messing around and it was a seriously fun time!  >:D Most of those nubs thought it was hilarious too.

HMP are you running standalone or mod? If mod shoot me a PM I've been playing a bit here and there and we could get together. If standalone it's out of my budget for the time being and probably beyond my getting long in the tooth gaming rig;)

    Take care!

I grabbed the Mod for the same reasons you outlined Luke. $6 for the whole package to play the Mod. I've managed not to die, but I'm out of Ammo, and getting hungrier...  :shrug.

Well accents for one, also the player behind the POV we were watching keeps mentioning that they are from the PC Gamer UK office and it was their first time streaming... He only mentions it after about the first half hour, so no worries if you got bored before then.

Check this out.  It's not DayZ, but it's kind of badass all on its own.  It's called the 2017 Mod, and it's for Arma 3.  Here's the website:

    http://2017mod.com/

Not much there yet.  Basically it's some kind of grim post-apocalyptic survival horror setting.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/20/arma-3-mod-2017-shows-a-world-of-creepers-and-sadists-in-new-video/

    Quote
In a new video for 2017, an upcoming survival-horror mod for Arma 3, the creature prototypes hint at multiplayer enemies with a dark and—and maybe inhuman—past. A good horror story usually has a moment where the hunted get's a glimpse of what's hunting him. It's often a split second of terror where the main character finally realizes just how out-matched he really is. And with its creeper and sadist characters, 2017 is putting its idea of horror on clear display.

The two creatures support the mod's move away from a scenario of infected humans initially proposed as a setting for the mod last year. Taking place some years after the collapse of human civilization, 2017 will put players in a survival role inspired by post-apocalyptic fiction such as The Road. With this inspiration in mind, beasties like the sadist, with his bulging belly and burlap-sack mask point to the corruption of a person who at one time, maybe, was just like everyone else.

The creepers on the other hand, with their burned-looking flesh and spindly bodies, set an entirely different mood. If the sadist has kept his more-or-less human appearance in the wake of the apocalypse, the creepers are something else entirely. The video above has packs of the prototype creatures lurking around the broken-down Arma 3 landscape with animation that only makes them seem more faceless and evil.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/19/rust-diary-part-2-its-hard-to-kill-a-half-naked-jumping-man/

Also, indie game RUST is in a similar vein.  :cool

    Quote
It's the dead of night and I'm in my cabin, which, at the moment, is essentially just a box. But I have plans for expansion. Big plans! Like adding a second box. Next to the main box. So it'll be two boxes. Anyway, I'm crafting with the spoils of my daytime scavenging and hunting. I've got ore simmering in the furnace, food cooking in the campfire, and I'm banging together some new building materials at my workbench. That's when I hear footsteps outside. They approach slowly, crunching through the grass, until they're right outside my cabin wall. Then they stop. Then... nothing.

Having a house in the Early Access crafting survival game Rust comes with a few benefits. Drop a sleeping bag, and now you have a place to respawn. Build a workbench and a forge, and now you have a place to craft. Build a storage box, and now you have a place to store your materials. There's a downside, however. Once you've got a home, you've got neighbors. And neighbors love to drop by.

I have played RUST.  It's intriguing because of it's crafting component.  Quite a bit of development to do yet, though.

By next month I'll be home and hopefully in a position where I can start gaming again.  I'll post more DAYZ updates as I'm able to get game time in.  I've still got a novel and a half to write this year, so free time is kind of limited.

    Another adventure!
    « Reply #98 on: June 03, 2014, 01:55:12 am »
Back into the fray.  I was pleased to note that I was still pretty well equipped from the last time I'd logged off months ago, despite the many changes and updates to the game.

I found myself in a deserted town.  I was well-armed with a rifle, a pistol, and a .357 revolver for which I had no ammunition.  Additionally, I had plenty of shotgun shells and first aid supplies.

What I didn't have was food, and I was pretty low on water.  Finding those two essentials became my first mission.

I thought about approaching the airfield, but I heard gunshots and hit the deck.  I don't think they were aimed at me, but I decided to hit the road before I encountered somebody.

I encountered my first and second zombies right about then.  The first one I simply shot.  But, in lieu of wasting ammo, I decided to use my trusty fire axe.

It proved to be less trusty than I recalled.  It used to drop the walkers in one blow.  It took several to drop this guy, and he got in some good licks in the process.  Victorious, I bandaged myself and continued on my way.  (In this instance, the painful clunkiness of the ARMA II engine proved frustrating.  Basic movements are very awkward.)

A search of a bombed out car netted me 25 rounds of .45ACP ammo!

At this point I was getting hungry.  I followed the road and saw a town off in the distance.  I decided to go search some houses and see if I could find some food.

Success!  My house searching paid off.  I found a can of beans, holed up in a second-story room, and ate greedily.

Even better, I found this baller cowboy hat!  I'm riding out the apocalypse in style.

Moving on, I decided to approach on of the larger towns and see what was going on.  One of the things about DayZ is that you have to make your own missions.  Once you're equipped, there really isn't anything for you to do other than to wander around and maybe murder other players.

Once in town I moved carefully.  There are way too many angles to cover by yourself.

It's easy to get complacent, and you're limited by the field-of-view of the game.  You need to approach situations cautiously.

To better scout the town, I made my way to the top floor of a tall building and looked around.  I heard gunshots, but couldn't tell where any of them were coming from.

This seemed as safe a place as any to camp out, however.  I decided to take a load off here.  It'll be just my luck that when I respawn, I'll appear five stories in the air and fall to my death (it's happened before).

    That's all for now!

    All men must die.

I didn't fall to my death upon respawning.  However, I was awoken to the sound of gunshots coming from the building I was in!

    Holy crap!

Realizing that getting out of the building alive would be a challenge when there was a dude on the roof with a rifle, I decided to sneak up on him.  I found the ladder to the roof, climbed up, and found him prone.  He had been shooting at someone.

He saw me.  Again, ARMA's clunky, clunky mechanics came into play as I fumbled for my M4.  I got my weapon to bear and shot him dead.

    Winning.

He had a good haul on him.  Scoped Mosin-Nagant, a pistol, and who knows what else.  I crawled over to him, trying to stay low.  However, the clunky engine wouldn't let me search his body prone, so I had to move up to kneeling.  I hadn't gotten his stuff off of him yet when someone else killed me with a single well-placed shot.  I think I died about five minutes after logging onto the server.

    Circle of life.

As was said, DayZ is "at best, unreasonably cruel".
