It's engrossing.  Even though I've been playing more Borderlands 2 than anything.

But hey, head's up.  My gaming days are almost over for a while.  I'm leaving for four to six months, and the gaming rig isn't coming on the plane with me. :(

    But, in the meantime...

Anyway, if this thread's gonna be a sticky, it can't just be me.  Everyone who plays DayZ occasionally make a log and throw it up on here.  If you're playing through Steam, you can take screenshots at any time by pressing F12.  I use Photobucket, which is free, to upload the photos so I can display them here.

I'll see if I can capture some pics and video from my next adventure.  My first one involved me fearing I'd die of dehydration, or hunger. Nope... not this time.

I was moving between buildings in a small village when I saw movement.  By this time I had already avoided a handful of zombies.  This guy comes running down the stairs at a construction site.  He's carrying an M4. I have a pipe wrench, so I put it away once I realized he saw me.  I hit voice chat and said "Hello, do you..."

The bandit raised his M4.  I called out, "Easy, easy!"

The bandit didn't say a word.  (Playing this game without a mic should be grounds for hanging.)

He runs past me.  So I start running the opposite way.  I think I'm in the clear, I glance behind me and the bandit is still running, so I figure we're cool.  I almost made it to the protection of a concrete wall when he fired a single shot and my screen went black. #*(^&#@!!!

All I had was an empty water bottle, a couple cans of food, and the ubiquitous flashlight.

This game needs a karma system.  Shooting an unarmed survivor should make it more likely for zombies to spawn in your area for the next 15 minutes or something.

My next spawn I actually found a backpack almost right away. The storage! Being able to hold more than what can fit in jeans and a hoodie is amazing!

    Music video time!

    No I didn't make it.

Sadness.  Here's to a change of pace  :coffee
    Seriously, I hope it's a good thing.
    Gaming laptop?

I fired up the DayZ mod for Arma2 again.   After a few install issues (my fault, probably) I got it working.  I'll be warming up with this before I see if I want to get the SA.  There are still quite a few servers running this so I'll have plenty of opportunities to get shot in the head for my can o' beans.

I just bought the game. Installing it now. Here's hoping it's good. A buddy at work isn't a fan. He calls it a walking simulator.

    Second dayz.

I ran into some guy with an axe.  He hit me with it, and I ran off.  Great, now the game is a, "I lost my glasses simulator."

But on the plus side I found a big pipe wrench.

Here I am tactically clearing a room with my wrench!

As I'm coming out of a building I run into a couple of guys holding guns.  Literally, they were coming in as I was coming out.

    Them:  "Get on the ground!"

Me: "I'm in no condition to hurt anyone."

Them: "Well we have a blood bag here."

    Me: "Thanks."

Them: "My friend here likes your green backpack, he'll trade you his orange one for it."

Well since I was handcuffed on the ground I didn't have much of a choice.

    Me: "Thanks again."

So they left and gave me some 5.56 ammo.

This was the nicest thing anyone has ever done to me in this game.

So I decided to pay if forward when I found a bleeding guy named "unknown entity" without any pants on.  Here I am bandaging his gushing wounds with some rags.

    Then it crashed.  :-(

Maybe I'll pick it up once I get a new PC and Steam has it on sale again.   I'll be needing to buy a new one anyway in 9-12 months to run Star Citizen.

Unfortunately, everyone will probably have already moved on by then and it will be old news.

Awesome.  I love the crazy things that can happen in a game with no story.  You just make your own story.

People are still playing the DayZ mod, and the game is currently only in Alpha release.  It's not going anywhere, and it's only going to improve with time.

Just FYI Humblebundle.com has a weekly bundle with the ArmaII games (including dayZ mod) for $6 I just grabbed it. Keys are good on steam. Hope to see you guys out there.

Dang that's a price I just can't skip, here goes nothing since I've got no spare time as it is I guess I'll fiddle with the mod for a while;)

It looks like it's everything needed to play the mod, which is different from the standalone and likely not going to be supported for very long(at least I'd guess), but for $6(you need to do $6 to get the other ARMA game needed) it's hard to go wrong I think it will be fun;)

It does have everything, you can link your humble bundle to steam then no copying keys, just click on the redeem button (I buy more games from these guys...) and it shows up in steam. To get DayZ Mod running install Arma 2, Install Arma 2 operation arrowhead (needed expansion (around 8 GB each) then after starting each of them once (I had to dig to find that step) install Dayz mod. At this point... I still couldn't play on servers because steam had the wrong version. (Maybe just different... but still) Grab DayZ Commander. Solves all the problems, finds your install folders, updates them, and filters servers in a much better package than the built in game browser. Can even launch the game via steam if you want it to, or skip steam altogether.

So far... I have spent most of my time there running from Zombies... did you know you can vault fences? I didn't! Cutting around obstacles to confuse a zombie AI is exhausting. But I haven't died yet.

That can't be far off as the only thing I have is an empty Makarov...

Well while Sarah and Eli are sleeping I tried some DayZ and I'm willing to admit got my butt handed to me by zombies several times :facepalm One thing I did notice though is holey convoluted interface, makes the inventory management in the Stalker games look good, hard to figure out what the heck your doing. Even after watching beginner videos I'm mostly lost. If there was ever a game that could benefit from a good well written manual it's this one;) It could be because I have zero experience with ARMA(and I'm not thrilled with the engine thus far), but I'm having a heck of a time getting used to it.

That said after a little while I found I finally got a weapon, Axe though at that point I had 10+ zombies chasing me. So I got up in a little room with no exit that was only accessible via ladder and hacked each one as they climbed up. Combat especially Mele seems very glitchy and well that's a complaint with the engine. So I bandaged myself and got ready to see if I could find anything else now that I wasn't defenseless anymore. Walked down through the lobby, found a small building went inside to find not much of anything. Turned around to ZOMBIE right about to eat my brains. Made short work of him with the axe and off to check out other things. Found a town but unfortunately most of the building's aren't accessible so I'm still hunting for a firearm and ammo.

Fun so far but the combat is pretty glitchy for my taste, could be my video card and FPS causing some of it, but generally feels like the engine is stretched for the huge outdoor environments and inside stuff as well. Combat and movement reminds me of Fallout 3 without VATS for those familiar. Cool idea not sure I'm going to be able to get past the engine though.

    Take care!

I just got shot in the head for my can o' beans.

     :facepalm

Well, there may have been a little bit more to it.

I worked my way into the southern airfield.  Three dead players were around the helo (quite a few mods on this server) and I passed two dead in the field.  As my truck passed the little bird, I started taking fire.  I had it floored and the hangar was but a few yards away.  Two zombies were in the hangar and I thought I ran them down, but I still had two by the door when I got turned around.   The incoming hostile fire stopped.  My new friend wasn't in the field, at least.  Maybe he had run out of ammo.
I did a loot-n-scoot gaining a can of beans, a can of beans & franks, and a soda.  I started in the back of the hangar to have max speed with my truck.  He hadn't run out of ammo.
I tried running the zombies over.  Couldn't tell the outcome.
I drove around the hangars but saw no one, taking fire the entire time.  The truck was shot (tires were gone, body was showing a fair amount of damage) and I ran down the last side.  I like the peek function (Q and E) for looking around corners.  No ping, ping, ping..  I risked a run to the little bird without stopping to loot the bodies.  I got in the chopper and saw that the engine was shot (literally?) and it was out of gas.
Great.  Got to the choppa.  Gonna die.
I got out and ran for the wall.  No fire.  I flee to the other end of the airfield where a tall building stands.  I catch a glimpse of another human in the bushes, but we're moving in opposite directions.  Was that him?  Had he been shooting from the tower?  Maybe, but he hadn't shot at me in the bushes.
When I got to the tower I came upon a scene of slaughter (38 out of 50 on a server).  Three dead were in the door.  One in the room beyond.  I heard nor saw anyone living.  My health, hunger, bloodlevel, and thirst all sated on the loot just left behind, I began to move upstairs.  Blood leaked from the ceiling (glitch, but kinda dramatic at the time).  I don't know how long you bleed in this game.  Only one of three bodies were still bleeding.  M4 with ACOG and one mag, another bloodbag.  One more level to go.
It's empty.  Some ammo, and a can of beans is on the floor and I scoop them up.  Inventory full.
I have the ammo, so I decide to top off my hunger as I hate to waste food.  Then I'll pick up that other can of beans and GTFO.
Movement out of the corner of my eye.  Someone is on the ladder outside the window.  He goes right past without noticing my still form...I thought.
When he reaches the roof of the level below, he opens fire.  I'm prone and far enough back that remain unhurt.
He has friends.  The text I'm reading tells me that they just got here.  Someone sniped one of them.  The massacre below me was unbelievable.
And, Oh, we have the bastard trapped upstairs.
Wasn't me.  Not that they're going to believe me.
Some more texting and someone runs up the stairs and opens up on me.
Then he walks behind me and shoots me some more.
And then that last can of beans disappears off the floor.
       Bastard.

My first time didn't go so well. I tried to climb some scaffolding to get into a building. I fell off and broke my leg so all I could do was crawl. Nobody was around to kill me, so I had to slowly crawl up more scaffolding to jump to my death. My next play through I ran into two zombies while I was unarmed. I managed to beat them to death with my fists, but I passed out from blood loss. My friend told me I could tear up my shirt to make rags. Good advice. Next play through went better. I got gear, a backpack, even a can opener. Then my game glitched so I had to have my friend kill me. Final run of the night was going so well. Met up with my friend again. We started clearing a small town. I got a backpack, a hoody, and a fire axe. My friend gave me the gear he looted from when he shot me. I thought things were going well. Right up until some jerk put a couple bullets in me while I was minding my own business and drinking water.

We should pick a server and a time to get some WTA dayZ going on. Sadly I don't think my little server box is up to hosting a dayz server or I would offer. I may be wrong and should check it out. Is there a single player version of this mod? Being chased by howling zombies for a good 15 minutes had made me a smidge jumpy around them. I'd like some practice...

    Just find an empty server.
This game in general will make you jumpy as hell.
Get involved in a couple really tight gunfights and it will get your adrenaline MOVING!

    Game is insanely fun though!

Agreed find an empty server, find some gear, then exit after a little while to make sure your gear stays then jump into a server with a few guys and have fun. That said I'm up for a get together online but there is the trouble of guys running standalone vs. mod(I'm running mod) since they aren't cross compatible. Other trouble at least for me is time, I've probably spent an hour or two total so far playing. I've been limiting myself to the time from when Sarah puts Eli down till I go to bed, so it's been anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour lately.

Last night I came back after getting an M4 which was cool, got 2 mags and had my trusty axe which I like for killing zombies at least indoors where they don't run. Outside your going to take damage indoors mostly you can get away with whacking them safely. I went out and Rambo'd a bunch of zombies, ran out of ammo and got killed quite terribly;) started again, ran and ran some more found where I was stole all my gear again. Out of ammo this time I ran to the roof, killed all the zombies chasing me, then looked around for either a different gun or ammo found an MP5 but no ammo. Then saw a note on screen that I had sepsis and would die without antibiotics shortly. Well I went running around looking for antibiotics and didn't find any so I died again;)

We'll see tonight maybe I'll get something more, so far fun, but time consuming and as such I'm not sure it will work much for me but still worth the $6 so far;)
