Saw this at Toys'R'Us today (lamenting the lack of good military action figures and looking for spare parts for Frankenfigures.)

Saw Godzilla's opponent in the Godzilla Destruction City set.

Looks a little like Clover from Cloverfield with the limb setup.  But the hooked claws - this might just be Gigan, though the name is "Muto."

Also - there are some SWEET classic and millenial Godzilla figures out for it.

Yeah, this movie is basically “humans effed up” on a large scale. “Muto” was created by humans. Unsure as to motive. Either it was an accident or we created it to fight the big G. I think there is more than one too. Or that it hatches “larvae”. Unsure as to whether Rodan is on Gojira’s side or playing for its own team.

That might not be a Rodan.  It could be a winged Muto.

And if the Muto is flying, IT'S the creature knocking F-22's out of the air.  Meaning Godzilla is the one who has to clean up the mess.

    Saw it today.

Also, people talking about 150mm shells against his hide...

    Popular mechanics:
    Quote
    Powerhouse

At rest, Godzilla's metabolism would generate 1.4 megawatts, or about as much power as that of a large wind turbine. On a rampage—smashing helicopters, knocking over buildings, fighting Mothra—he'd generate about 37 megawatts. That's enough energy to fuel a town of 3000 people.

    Bad to the Bone

The force on Godzilla's bones is roughly 20 times greater than the force on a T. rex's, so his bones would need to be phenomenally strong—about twice as tough as some titanium alloys. Normal bone has a tensile strength of 150 megapascals, but Godzilla's bones can handle 3000 MPa—the same pressure found at the base of earth's lithosphere, 60 miles below the surface. Godzilla's cartilage would be about 12 times stronger than a human's, preventing his knees from exploding like overripe tomatoes—and making him the envy of basketball players everywhere.

    Thick Skin

Godzilla's exterior is tough. (Soldiers with rifles, really?) His crocodile-like hide would be embedded with osteoderms, or bony deposits akin to chain mail. Protruding osteoderms on his back and tail vent excess heat.

And was it worth it? As long as it was as good as Pacific Rim I'll take the family. If it doesn't cross that bar I'll wait

As good as Pacific Rim? Pacific Rim was a Saturday morning cartoon. Godzilla is an epic. Definitely worth seeing.

It's also a way better EOD movie than Hurt Locker.

IJust got out of GODZILLA.  It commits many sins.  The worst is being dull & overblown.

It kills of characters in melodramatic yet unimportant ways adding precious yet ultimately wasted minutes to its run time.

For a giant monster movie there are precious few monsters.  The audio is poorly mixed & frankly should have been cranked to 11.

The movie apes Michael Bays love of the military yet can't use them w his panache for cool.

The leadership decisions & bad writing are atrocious (the mutos feed on radiation so let's store a dormant not dead one - in a radiation storage site and it just gets worse from there.

Man of Steel is a better "destroy a city" movie but at least it was prettier.

The mutos are generic & hokey & Pacific Rim had better Kaiju.

Highlights - the score is a wonderful epic score that I need in my writing music catalog.

Godzillas creature design/update is a wonder.  Greatly enjoyed him for the 7 minutes he's in the movie (no that's not a joke).

Aaron Tyler Johnson is maturing into a solid lead & I'm really excited for his next films.  Next Bruce Willis?

Still better than Amazing Spiderman 2 but wish I'd gone & watched Captain America again

Harm clearly has taken leave of his senses. His judgement cannot be trusted on characters who do not originate from comics.

    (Nyah Nyah ;) )

Godzilla isn't really a giant monster movie.

Godzilla isn't like Pacific Rim. It isn't even like the dubbed G-movies we all grew up with either, with guys in rubber suits duking it out on a model city. Almost all of it is filmed from the human perspective. There are precious few wide shots showing the creatures in full. The story focuses on the characters, not the monsters. The monsters are part of the story, but not the center of it.

The pacing is slow. It's not like a typical summer blockbuster. There is little in the way of over the top heroics, few fiery explosions, and unlike a Marvel movie, almost no parts that try to get you to stand up and cheer. It has none of the excessively witty Buffy-banter that Joss Whedon and his writers are known for. None of the characters are larger than life or iconic.

It was more of a true Godzilla movie than probably any of the films since the original Gojira of 1954. That film, the original Japanese version, is dark and sad. Godzilla is a force of nature, like a tsunami. The original film made many references to WWII and Hiroshima; Godzilla 2014 did too.

I loved it, but many will likely share Hyrum's take on it. It's definitely not like, say, Avengers, a summer popcorn movie that everyone can enjoy. It's more artsy-fartsy than a movie about giant monsters is expected to be.

I found myself sucked into it, though. I really liked how they showed the carnage from the man on the street level. You feel small, powerless.  There's no super robot to cheer for; jut running and trying not to get crushed like a bug.

It's almost Lovecraftian in that sense, but without the mysticism or gibbering madness.

Really?  Because I thought it was an actual answer to how Michael Bay irrevocably raped the Transformers franchise.

Human soldiers risking their very existence against things that scoff at Harpoon missiles, let alone firearms.

The MUTOs actually had emotions, showing a little precedented affection for each other as well as grief.

Far superior street-level observation of the clash of titans than Cloverfield.

At least a flimsy excuse for Ford to be at the monster happenings.  Not only that, but there seemed to be a little bit of mythic bonding/mirroring between Ford (Frodo?) and the big G in their struggles.

    Harm needs a new stopwatch.

And now for something completely unPC.

Wow I responded comparing it to other summer popcorn flicks & all nightcrawler can do is compare it to a marvel movie.  Yay.  Points.

Sure Godzilla is a force of nature.  When he shows up.  Yeah its shot from the human perspective.  Who gives a fluff.  Seriously.  Walter white is an engineer who turns crazy conspiracy theorist who somehow uses Richter scale reports from a nuclear power plant to compare echo location 15 years later from memory?  Wtf?

There are plenty of monster money shots. They look good.  Too bad they are the only decent bits.

If the monsters aren't the center of the story then  all it Family Reunited then torn apart when a couple monsters wreck the world off camera...

I didn't say it was slow for a summer blockbuster (BTW stow the s___ condescension because that's what this is) its slow for ANY movie.  Couple times I was looking for a remote to fast forward.

Its also full of the dumbest bulls___ on screen.  The mutos "eat" radiation but Godzilla (who by definition in the movie is also a prehistoric muto) doesn't?  I know let's let one incubate on 15 year old nuclear reactors but then missiles are "eaten" in minutes.  Of by the way the one muto snatches a goddamn sub from the north sea and dumps it in Honolulu to eat it.  WTF?

Nightcrawler is completely accurate there are no places to cheer - because even if there were you wouldn't because fluff these guys.  Johnson is likeable but the rest?  Not one makes an impression for you to care about.

Ooh references.  Big fluffing deal.  Superman made references to honor & 'right' & look how that fluffing turned out.

Its not an artsy movie - its a dull movie with a s___ty script.

Human soldiers sent to walk to sights already scouted by helicopters.  Fast roping is more efficient.  Instead its a Michael bay knockoff shot.  Soldiers shoot it w M4s?  Why?
Don't even get me started w that idiotic train sequence...

I don't care that the mutos touched noses.  I also hated that Godzilla & Johnson mimic'd each others injuries & emotions at the end.  Lame character linking.

    I didn't like cloverfield either.

I'm sure there is a section of the audience (and seemingly our board) creaming their pants over it.  But its just kaiju porn.  Its not about heroism or blockbuster or not.  Its about quality.  Anyone who knows me should know I'll call it like I see it.  Art house film or blockbuster.

This?  So many better monster movies.  This isn't one of them.

I'm by gosh. I was just giving you some crap, not being condescending. I still remember how mad you got when I said Avengers was an okay movie and pointed out plot holes. You take your fandom a little more seriously than I do. I was just poking you with a stick. I do apologize though.

All of these movies are going to have plot holes. They're working with decades-old source material and characters, much if which is impossibly cheesy to current audiences.

The main plot point of Captain America 2 was frankly ridiculous. Flying aircraft carriers with super-accurate guns? That's their plan to conquer the world? But I liked it anyway, because of the story and the themes.

Likewise, Pacific Rim didn't make a lick of sense if you sat and thought about it. But it was a good flick anyway.

I compared it to the Marvel movies and Pacific Rim because I've actually seen those. I haven't seen the newest reboot of Superman or Spider-Man.

But, if I'm to be accused of creaming my pants, I suppose I can retort by pointing out that Marvel fanboys who really wish it was Avengers vs Kaiju will be invariably disappointed.

Neener neener. Lower your hackles, bro. Let's not reinforce stereotypes by getting into nerdy arguments about scifi movies on the internet. So help me Nylarthotep I will use the dark arts to raise my dad from the grave to beat up your dad.

Well he's going to have try hard - my dad died 17 years ago...

It was a s___ movie.  I stated I disliked it but didn't dislike it as much as I disliked Amazing Spiderman 2.  I didn't like it as much as I liked Captain American 2.  But I guess I've got to spell it out if I liked other movies more.

Don't jump backwards now that I'm kicking your nuts.  You can attack any movies you like.

I don't typically use little winky emoticons and say things like Nyah Nyah when I'm being all serious and butthurt. FYI.

These movies play heavily into nostalgia. I didn't grow up with comics. I don't get invested in iconic characters like Batman or Superman because I only know them from (mostly cheesy) movies (Adam West is the REAL Batman).

For instance, I thought the aliens in Avengers were dumb. Battleship had more menacing aliens. But, it was explained to me that the hover-sled riding guys were chosen because they come from an original comic storyline. That sort of thing holds water with fans.

People tend to be more forgiving of a film's problems is it makes a good portrayal of a character they already like. I suspect that's why they keep remaking Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, over and over.

Me, I grew up with Godzilla movies. Saying a Godzilla movie is bad has to be taken in stride with some of the truly awful ones that were made. So I'm pretty forgiving of its problems, since it was better than the Matthew Broderick one and most of the ones from the late 60s and 70s.

Enjoyed it. Don't really get all the people in the movie that were plinking away with small arms at the multiple-stories-tall monsters, though. The monsters are the size of large buildings. I'm thinking the M16 and M4 isn't going to do the job.

I was born in '65 and grew up with Godzilla (and monkey movies) and I hate them all still. The source material is junk to begin with and as the old saying goes, "You can't make chicken salad outta chicken $#!^."

I'll also go out on a limb here and publicly state that I hate Pacific Rim too. The giant monster & giant mecha genres just fall flat with me.

My only problem with the logic of the movie... Mutos tore open the side of a mountain, and no one on the other side noticed it?  I could imagine in the Phillipines, they could have passed it off as an Earthquake, since they are on the Pacific Rim.

But Yucca Flats?  Which had a guard gate and everything.  The staff in there wouldn't have heard the equivalent of an earthquake in a geologically stable zone?

As for "eating radiation" - and Godzilla being from that era of radiation-eating horrors - I just figured the following equation.

Grass.  Cows eat grass.  People eat grass by eating cows.
Radiation.  Mutos eat radiation.  Godzilla eats radiation by killing Mutos.

Then again, I've been reading a lot of Rifts and about Psi-Stalkers - human psychics mutated to feed on supernatural creatures and magic users and the magic they store in their bodies.  The magic energy doubles upon death, and the Psi-Stalker can feed off of a kill shot from, I believe, 50 feet distant.

Also, Godzilla's been fed quite often, inadvertantly, but the Monarch folks trying to kill him.  He just didn't want the Mutos stealing his fix.

IllinoisAfter a shooting spree, they want to take the guns away from everyone who didn't do it.

SJW is not a synonym of "leftists" or "liberals". Left-wing and right-wing positions are based on economics. SJWs are left-authoritarians which means that they are not liberals. Don't paint all leftists or liberals with the same (misguided) brush.
