Jurassic World
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:02:42 am »
We saw it last night and loved it. Without giving anything away, if you liked the original, you'll love this one. Its part Jurassic Park, part Indiana Jones. The Marlin Guide gun and old Triumph Scrambler were awesome in their own right. That said, I think this one will be the last one

Do we forget that cops were primarily still using 6 Shot Revolvers well through the mid 80's? It wasn't until after 1986 that most departments then relented and went to autos.
Capacity wasn't really an issue then... and honestly really it's not even an issue now.

I'm really torn on this, I want to see it just like I wanted to see the first ones since I'm a big Crichton fan and I've read everything he published and liked the vast majority of it. That said the first movie was the best of the bunch but I still felt it wasn't nearly as good as the book and the following movies were pretty bad, to terrible. So I'm excited to see it but I really expect to be disappointed which is making it hard to decide if I'm going to spend the cash to see it in the theater or not.

I saw Jurassic World also, midnight premier, it was incredibly awesome and I think redeemed the series.

I'll go see it but seeing how I just saw Mad Max yesterday it might be awhile.  :facepalm

Ok just got back from Jurassic World.

    Short Response -
it was far better than I hoped/feared & was tons of fun.  Exhilarating & often hilarious, it's not perfect, but it's flaws are forgivable.  Dare I say, replaces Avengers in my Top 3 Favorite films this year standing shoulder to shoulder to Mad Max & Kingsmen.

It's also got better giant monster moments than last year's Godzilla (yeah I went there).

Caveat - it's pretty intense, mostly bloodless, but terrifically intense.  Mind the PG-13.  Frankly I will not be taking any of my kids to see it & they loved the original 3 films.  I loved it, but it's not for the sensitive.

    Long Response -
Michael Chrichton's novel was a brooding lecture & assault of the horrors of genetic meddling & science gone astray.  Steven Spielberg made a beautiful ode to childhood love of the great lizards, innocence lost & coming of age.  I think in many ways this manages to touch on some of Spielbergs vision to make this universe an enjoyable one, while veering sharply to an adrenaline pulsing version of Chrichton & his novels.

    The bad -
the setup of the icy female too busy ceo feels stilted &  at the beginning yet I think it's necessary, somewhat for the movie to truly payoff.  But that doesn't make it great.

Vincent D'onofrio is a chameleon.  I just got done watching Daredevil with my wife & I couldn't see the kingpin in him.  He's great.  But he is also the prototypical Gung ho archetype, who's also not a good guy.  Hollywood loves them, but can't write them worth crap.  He's wasted, & frankly the films biggest plotholes.

The containment team/corporate decisions - send a squad of guys to use non lethals on a dinosaur bigger than a T Rex? What. The. Crap?  And some are carrying shock sticks?  Double what the crap?  Similarly - the mercs show up w M4s?  Granted a few M14s etc.  But if I'm hunting something big as a dinosaur, I want something capable of killing an Elephant DRFT!  At least.  If my boss gave me that stick & said go catch a T Rex I'd quit.  Although the magna muzzle was cool.

The jeep - I don't care who you are, how good you are in a shop.  That jeep, is not moving under its own power.

    The Good -
The cast, knowing where the story went, even the questions & characters I chided above, doesn't matter.  The cast is great. Chris Pratt, D'Onofrio,   Bryce Dallas Howard, Simpkins (kid from Iron Man 3) were great.  Utterly charming, fun, just a treat to watch.  Why is D'Onofrio not in more things?  And Chris Pratt? Disney, just give him the whip, the Webley & the Fedora already.

The story, you've seen the trailer.  You know the story.  But you dont.  It is happy to blaze it's own path for the better.  That actually brings up a second kudos, the marketing, gave you an idea of the basics without spoiling the truly great moments.  Bravo.

The Stakes - there is death.  Some small & quiet, some off screen & some horrifyingly close.  Think San Diego from The Lost World with more dinosaurs.  Made it extremely intense.

Animatronics & Puppetry - the first Jurassic Park had less than 12 min of CGI.  The rest was Animatronics & Puppetry.  The 2nd & 3rd films departed too much from that.  Well it's back & in a great way.  Loved it.  Made it feel real.

Raptor Squad - I was afraid from the get go that this would be cheesy.  Bad cheese.  And instead, it's really good.  Lived it.  Minor quibble with the cameras in one scene  (story not cinematography).  Another part about this did bug me a bit, but in the context, I'll forgive it.

Final thoughts - I was afraid this would either retread some road that one of the previous films took, or would instead depart in such a way as to disrespect them.  Instead we get a great, thrilling, heartfelt movie.  It has some absolutely terrific & terrifying moments.  But it was a joy. The ending is great. It revisited pieces of movies moments we loved from the first three, but never felt like it was repeating for repeating sake.  And again DANG that ending.

And finally I know the books & to some extent the movies are a warning, I'm just putting it out there, seeing the park in operation, if there really was a Jurassic Park, I'd take the whole family.  Every ride, every attraction.  I'm ready.  Bring on the dinosaurs.

Yes the only two points that bothered me:

    1) the under-gunned Asset Containment Unit (RIP). Oh yeah boss? If non-lethal is such a good fluffing idea, YOU armor up and do it. I also thought the spec ops guys later were under gunned too even though they fired a few AT4's. Where were the 40mm grenades, Barrett .50's of all flavors, claymores, etc.?

    2) the sleazy eeeeevil military plotter who is trying to turn Cuddles the Super Raptor into a mean ol' weapon. It was typical liberal anti-military Hollywood to make the military side of the team the fly in the ointment. I thought it was a great idea to send the raptor hybrids into the caves of Tora Bora. We "militarize" dolphins and K9's, why not dinos?

Exactly. Parked 15-20 years? Yeah. I could believe in dinos AND space aliens first.

I loved it. Thanks to 20+ years of nostalgia I doubt I'll ever love another (Dino) movie more than the first Jurassic Park... but this comes dang close. Went and saw this with a buddy who has been talking about it for months, after the ending I said to him, "Welp my life is complete." We both predicted what was coming, and still so, so, SO satisfying to see it happen.

My only other cringe other than the ones mentioned above was the pterosaurs... They mostly ate fish and small game, not carrying off creatures as big as they were.

Also... she still had those shoes at the end... steal something from the gift shop for crying out loud...

I took my 6 year old son.  He was fine.   :shrug Of course, I forced him to watch the original the day before so he may have been desensitized.

Otherwise, believe the hype.  This movie was awesome.  :thumbup1

    Went to see it monday.
Okay, yes, the Jeep Wrangler business.  Agree.  After 20 years, it ain't movin.'  But, hey, it's only a movie.
And those flying pterodactyls/pternodons?   Weren't they really fish-eaters?   One briefly tried to get a baby tricerotops off the ground and failed ---- but I doubt it could lift one as much as it did.  I doubt it would try.
But it was a good movie and lots of fun.
Indominus Rex ....I mean, what dinosaur's DNA were we supposed to think had been mixed with T Rex to get a T Rex like critter with arms that were actually useful? :scrutiny   Some not see THAT coming?   :shrug
Loved that grandslam fight at the end.

I confess:  I am a sucker for dinosaur movies, and have been since I was a little kid and watched Cesar Romero & Hugh Beaumont in the B- movie The Lost Continent on "THE FIVE-STAR SATURDAY MATINEE", and went on to any and every dinosaur movie one could find.   Now I have most of 'em on DVD.   And I don't ever plan to grow out of likin' dino movies!!!!!! :neener

Bang on with the Pterosaurs being fish eaters. I loved it and will happily go see it a couple more times in the theater. My little girls get scared during the opening of Lilo and Stitch... so sadly I won't get to take them to see this on a big screen.

Loved it. Almost as good as the original. Head and shoulders above 2 and 3....shudder, we should never talk about 3.....

Too, my 9 year old daughter.  She loved it and slept like a baby that night.  My son was too much of a baby to want to go.   :bash

Saw it for the second time last weekend. I agree with everything stated in this thread positive and negative. The funny thing is that the woman running around everywhere in stillettos is what bugged me the most! :D I also didn't like the way D'Onofro's character was portrayed, though he did the best he could with the character given to him.

I really liked that Dr. Wu made a reappearence and how his character played out. He had the aura of menace that should have been invested in D'Onofrio's character as well, in a more overt way.

So glad to see the Marlin .45-70 Guide gun get some prime screen time!  :thumbup1

Here's my problem with Jurasic World.
    Katie McGrath.

She was only in the background.   She stole the series "Merlin" from the BBC.  She makes your knees weak in The Tudors.
She's absolutely delicious, and even more so when playing a naughty role.
And all she did in Jurasic World was talk on a cellphone and get swallowed.  She's the one that should have been doing the swallo... never mind.
She should have been the main female lead.  Not Bryce Dallas Howard... Who's fine... But she can't share the screen with Katie.  Not even close.

I saw the original in the theater when it came out, and it was excellent - makes me feel old to realize it was over 20 years ago and by that time I had been out of the military for a few years...
I went to see Jurrasic World, and it felt like it just picked up right where the other left off. I never saw any of the ones in between, didn't have any desire. So to me they were bookends. And the ending was flippin' perfect.
