Here's pretty cool trailer for the John Carter Of Mars flick coming out in March 2012. I just hope the green man shown at 1:13 is Tars Tarkas's anemic, runt-of-the-litter brother and not supposed to be the mighty Jeddak of Thark himself. The trailer greenie looks like he has tusks on his earlobes for cripe's sake! Tars had tusks jutting out of his lower jaw reaching nearly up to his eyes AND two torsos with four arms total. He was a massive killing machine.

But whats up with the whole beginning w the "mr boroughs" bit? Seems disjointed.

Never fear regarding Tars Tarkas. You hear him in the trailer (Willem "i can do anything" Dafoe) but he is not seen.

BTW they changed the name - its a planned trilogy - this one is simply called John Carter. Of Mars will likely be of Mars.

Well, it was written that way, how ERB "originally received" the idea - from the journals of his beloved uncle, a Civil War vet who fell into bad fortune before finding that cave.

Maybe now is the time to dig out the old paperbacks and refresh my memory a bit or maybe not as I don't want to be disappointed by the movie version...

My memories of JC are from the comic in the late 70's / early 80's. I need to read the books since I never have.

I think it's the best way to explain John Carter's background (might be hard for film goers to keep in mind that he's not supposed be a 21st century guy on Mars otherwise), and framing the story within another this way is a pretty common sort of device.

I'm glad they kept it in the right era and didn't send "Justin Timberlake of the 21st Century" to Mars. I love that late 1800's / early 1900's period where there was no gore-tex, nylon, GPS, etc, just leather and canvas, steel and wood with a turn of modern tech creeping in a Jules Vern / ERB way. Not steampunk by any means but close.

I found this second trailer for John Carter when I followed Harm's Hobbit link. It looks pretty darned cool and has the knockout chick from Wolverine to boot twho reminds me of a young version of my wife:

The first three books are really one long story. Hopefully Disney will do the series justice though I suspect a few elements will be removed and some added. So far, they have done a pretty good job on the Narnia books so I am hopeful.

Just got back from John Carter of Mars. We took our oldest out to eat and to the movies for her birthday. It was great fun and a rollicking adventure. It was a comic book brought to life. The comics of the late 70's /early 80's were my first exposure to JCofM and this won't disappoint if you let yourself go and immerse yourself in that world. Some purists may disagree but pffft. We are taking our other kids tomorrow night and I can't wait to sit back and relax and enjoy the replay.

BTW Lynn Collins/Dejah Thoris is mesmerizing. She reminds me of the missus 25 years ago...and still, dear, if you are reading this

I'm glad you liked it. There's hope. ERB is still one of my favorite authors, and his work got me into reading in the first place when I was a kid.

I have to see this in theaters. I think I'll go Sunday morning.

Oh god, yes...that woman is gorgeous! We (the Mrs. & I) saw it in 3D today, and we thought it was excellent. Loved it. I felt it was like watching a live-action Frazetta painting. I've never read ERB's JCM books, nor read the comic, so I had no clue what the story entailed. It was a very well done Sci-Fi story... so rare to find these days. I honestly cannot recommend it enough.

I enjoyed the movie as I did the books. I'm so sick of hearing how it "tanked" in the American market

it seems that if a movie doesn't make back all of it's budget in the opening weekend, it's considered a tank

anyway, I liked the movie and so did my wife

Thanks to Hollywood accounting, it's rare that any movie will turn a profit. Somehow plenty of people get rich making them anyway.
