FarCry 4
« on: November 26, 2014, 09:36:55 am »
Okay I don't know if any of you have gotten into the FarCry series of games -- but I have.  The latest installment takes the open world and gameplay of FarCry 3 and ramps it up a couple notches.  The open world aspect is great, with lots of options for how to get places and approach objectives.  But also the crazy stuff that can happen in the game keep it fun and interesting.

Like...  when you are walking along a path and suddenly you hear a crash and people screaming above you, then you look up and see a car fly sideways off the cliff and slam into the ground a few feet away from you.  The rhino that slammed into the car and shoved it off the cliff stands on the cliff before it trots away gloating.

Or you have a wild boar in your crosshairs and just before you pull the trigger a damn eagle swoops down and grasps the hog and flies off.  Next you see the eagle try to clear a summit, not quite make it and drop the hog to its death so it can gain elevation.

Or when an elephant gets too close to the edge of a river and a croc leaps out and latches onto the elephants trunk -- prompting the elephant to stomp the croc to death.

The gun battles, vehicle driving, aerial travel via wingsuit, etc... are all handled nicely as well.  All in all it's a highly entertaining game with lots of action and things to keep you interested.

Vanoss and H2ODelirious have been posting their co-op adventures in Far Cry 4.  The second episode is 17 minutes of jackassery with NSFW language, and H2O's hilarious panic screams and insane chuckles.

And yes... those eagles seem to have an attitude against humans.  But not so much as Vanoss does against the Shop Guys...

    Enjoy.

I've been playing Far Cry since Predadator & Instincts and really liked FC 2 & 3 so 4 had huge shoes to fill.  I picked up FC4 yesterday for my XBOX ONE (along with Hyrule Warriors...but that's a different topic) and so far have a little over 5 hours of play/explore time.  I'm not all that crazy about the driving controls but there is little choice on how to map the controller with gas & brake control while being able to shoot at the same time.  The visuals are insane and I like that if you go with either the man or woman's quest it changes the missions which makes the replay value that much higher.  So far I'm having a great time with it.

I'm a fan of the Far Cry series, but it hasn't been a love affair without it's tribulations.

Far Cry 1 was a fantastic game for it's time, under-appreciated, I thought.  It had many innovative combat and movement features, but what really made it attractive was the concept.  The idea of a former SF operative (in a red tropical shirt, no less) single-handedly fighting a deadly battle against a rogue corporation, mercenaries, and bio-engineered mutants amidst WW2 ruins in a tropical paradise...  Well:  Awesome!

Far Cry 2, I did not like, and left it unfinished.  Although it had some new and interesting features, the lack of a strong lead character, and excessive travel times from save points made it pretty much un-playable for me.

Far Cry 3 restored my faith.  It is visually beautiful, very playable.  Features a single central character, fast travel, and the side quests allow for extended play time outside of the main story arc.  It contains all of the themes that made the story of Far Cry 1 so attractive, and expands upon them with more compelling motives, fleshed out characters, and an extensive crafting and adventure system.  I also appreciate the very cinematic vision.  It faced some arguable criticisms in terms of story, but over all, excellent game.

Far Cry 4, meh.  The jury is still out.  The visuals are amazing, but conceptually it seems to be Far Cry 3.2.  That would be ok, but what kills it for me though is that I have a bug that won't save game progress.  So whenever I close the game and restart, I am literally back at the start.

I freaking LOVED Far Cry 1.  I loved that the protag was an Anti-Hero.  I loved how it went from adventure game to sci-horror and just went off the f'ing rails.  Loved the volcano explosion etc.

I hated Far Cry 2 with a fiery passion.

I never picked up Far Cry 3...  Now its on sale... maybe?

I'll give this a shot but I'm not paying $60...  Good to hear its good though.

Harm - get Far Cry 3... and also get the "update" BLOOD DRAGON!  Because Blood Dragon is sooo much of a love letter to 80's SF action movies - right down to Michael Biehn and the name Colt Steele.

Incentive to get Blood Dragon?  THE OPENING SEQUENCE IS YOU - IN A HELICOPTER - DOORGUNNING AS LONG TALL SALLY BLARES.  Not just doorgunning - MINIGUNNING - and blowing up conveniently placed explosive tanks on towers.

I play on PC and the driving controls are improved a little over FC3.

There's an Easter Egg in FC4 that I love. It's possible to complete the game in about 15 minutes, just by doing exactly what you're told and accomplishing what you actually set out to do.

Been watching the vids on youtube and the game looks highly entertaing.  I got GTA V for the Xbone, but I've played it on 360 so much already that some diversity in the diet might be nice.
