I just got these for Father's Day. Just as Harm is a flashlight ho', I'm a knife ho' and shamelessly so.
 The Glock mags are for scale.



I usually do a dry run at Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville for heft, size, etc. but haven't had the time to go over the mountain. I mentioned these two blades, hoping I'd get one and got both!

The Schrade Bowie is huge and photos on Amazon don't do that justice. It's darn near a short sword but balance is good and that makes it dance lightly in the hand. It locks in its injection molded sheath a bit too tightly and I'm going to have to file it down a bit at a time until it pulls just right. The grip scales are a bit rubbery without being too tacky and hanging up on clothing. It's so wide and big overall that it will have to be secured to a pack. It's blade is 10.3" and over all it's 16".






The Schrade recurve is shorter at 8" and really wide ( which I really like for some reason) but much more manageable. It's 14" overall. It, too, is light and easy in the hand and balance is not just good but excellent. The handle scales are the same as the Bowie. It also has an injection molded sheath and it both locks in and pulls free smoothly. It's my favorite of the two knives.






The belt loops on both sheaths are molded into the sheaths and are not removeable. I'm going to cut those off and use 550 cord through the sheath eyelets as belt loops so it's rides higher and has more mounting options.

The edges on both are razor sharp and slickly so. I like a toothy edge and will work that up on them this weekend when I'm off. Both are titanium coated 8Cr13MoV High Carbon Stainless steel whatever the heck that means.

Thank goodness this warning came with the knives too. Bless you Governors Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown and Gavin Newsome (what kind of soap opera horse s___ name is GAVIN???) for all your nannyness and saving me from myself.

I'm digging the Bowie. Can you tell if it's possible to set up the sheath for left side wear?

Good looking knives.  Speaking of Harm, I haven't noticed him being around lately - anybody heard from him?   

He's fine. Just very busy.

I own the same Bowie and I dig it allot. I could be mistaken but I think your wrong on the steel with that one though. From memory that one is 1070 carbon rather than stainless but I could be wrong. Nothing  wrong with 8cr but for big knives often schrade does 1070.

I don't know fo' sho'. I'm just going off what the Amazon specs said but they are notoriously inaccurate. I don't know much at all about the different knife steels. I heard once there were two kinds, a stainless steel and carbon steel. That's about the breadth of my metallurgy LOL

8CR13/14MoV is a Chrome-molybdenum-vanadium steel with about 0.8% carbon 13-14% chrome, 0.2% moly and nickel, 0.1% vanadium and 1% manganese and silicon.
it should perform very similarly to AUS-8 steel, 9CR18MoV is like AUS-10 ect.
basically- their ChroMolyVan steels. same stuff wrenches and sockets are made out of, but with a little more carbon. (Wrenches are close to 5CR15MoV, which still makes a wicked blade.)

straight 1070 is pretty much 0.7% carbon, some manganese and the rest is iron. it should exhibit okay edge retention. better then all but the high end of the 400 series stainless steels. and on par with the MoV and AUS families.

I personally prefer 5160 or 1095 for bigger blades, honestly- 1095 is the gold standard. easy to sharpen, holds a wicked edge, easy to work with. not as forgiving as 5160, but it's a straightforward steel.
I like my 8CR13MoV blades fine. heck, I like the MoV family a ton.
but gimme that straight up high carbon for my field knife, because until you get into the really high end, niobium/tungsten type exotic alloy steel, 1095 is really hard to beat.
