Spyderco Knife for Wife's birthday
« on: September 08, 2011, 04:10:34 pm »
Ok, so the wife has carried a Ruko Tanto 1/2 serrated blade for about ten years.  And I wind up sharpening it about once every two.  So the rest of the time it is dull as hell.  Seriously, she mis-uses a knife in every way possible.  The serrations stay sharp but the plain edge portions are dull as a toothpick.

So what I am thinking is:  I get her a fully serrated knife like the Spyderco Pacific Salt.  That thing will stay sharp for years the way she uses it.

Ideas?

Spyderco is a decent knife, but I think I'd spend a little more and go with a Benchmade or a Kershaw (ZT), maybe a Cold Steel.

Blade snob. T sharpens his Benchmade while drinking champagne with his pinky in the air.

Just kidding. I'm a Benchmade guy, my brother-in-law swears by Spyderco. In all honestly, both are good. If your wife likes/needs the Spyderco, go for it.
I'm not saying you should use an M1A for home defense, but I'm also not saying you shouldn't.

I have an Spyderco Salt series folder. It is a great knife but does not hold an edge well. I would go with the Benchmade Griptillian. It is available in a similarly rust resistant finish. See my previous topic below. If you don't specifically need a highly corrosion resistant knife, a Spyderco Delica or Endura may work well for you. My wife is hard on knives (mostly through neglect) and her all stainless Delica has yet to rust. It also holds an edge well.

What I bought my wife. I told her to use this one just for cutting an attacker off of her. She has a Gerber multi-tool for grunt work.

You must have the only woman out there that listens well.

Hardly but thanks. Wonderful girl but half the time I think I must be speaking a foreign language. No, she likes the Gerber tool because of the wrist flicking action to open it. She thinks it's fun. And she's seen me turn many requests down on borrowing my own folder for mundane tasks; I always hand folks my multi-tool.

At the risk of starting a semantics war, when showing her how to use her knife, I've always stressed that it's a weapon, not a "tool."

If you are looking for a knive with excellent rust resistance and GREAT edgeholding, take a look at the Boye Boat Knife.  Cast cobalt steel that can't rust.  The casting process locks the carbide particles that do the cutting into the matrix of the steel.  When sharpened, it creates a micro saw tooth edge that really cuts and rarely needs sharpening.  Even cuts well through that tough boating rope.  Take a look and google for online reviews and you will see what I mean.  Here is a link.

After much hymning and hahhing, shopping and handling, I ordered her a Spyderco Endura with the fully serrated edge.  After she's broken it (in) I'll post a review.
