Schrade camp hatchet
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:05:54 pm »
I picked up a Schrade camp hatchet yesterday that while similar to a Gerber hatchet, it has more of a fighting hawk edge to it. I also really like the checkered hammer poll on the backside. It is also very well balanced and agile in my hand. It would be capable of camp work or taking the fight to an attacker. I especially like the norsehawk type edge with its points. It comes with a sheath, Lansky puck and a fire striker that fits in the handle. $39

Schrade seems to really be paying attention to the outdoors market. Looks to be a damn good tool for the price.

By all accounts, that is a tough axe. Schrade recently reformulated the handle so that it will stand up to below freezing weather without breaking. The reviews I've seen have all been positive. I'll likely get one this year sometime.

That's what I was going to mention, make sure it's the version with the new handle or don't use it in cold weather. The older version apparently wasn't made for cold and had failures. You can find the videos about it from Chris at Prepared Mind on Youtube he goes through it pretty well.

How do I tell if it's the new and improved handle?

That's a good question not sure. I know they released the new one but never saw how to tell them apart.
