If you want cheap and good, Arcos is a Spanish brand that will serve well.  I have used one of their lower end chef's knives for 7 years, and it is the knife I usually reach for.  On-line, you can find a 3 knife deal from this manufacturer for ~$40, which blows my mind.

There also are several Brazilian brands who make quality home-kitchen chef's tools.

We have one Spanish and one Brazilian 8" chef's, along with the Wustoff that we got as a wedding gift 20 years ago, and they are all excellent knives.  The Wustoff has better balance and harder steel.  But for a home cook, that harder steel is almost a drawback, as the others are easier to sharpen in the 30 seconds you have between coming home and starting dinner.

Thanks everyone for your input.  I wanted to let you know that I got her a small Henkel set that came with a sharpener.  She is really enjoying them so far.   :cool

That's good news; I hope that you won't gain too much weight.    >:D

A brand I have had very good luck with is the Kiwi brand from Thailand - well designed, decent stainless steel and very reasonably priced.

Oooooh, Kiwi brand. I have two of them, and I use 'em all the time. I was afraid that you'd all laugh at me if I mentioned them. They're cheap, they work, they're wicked sharp and they're easy to keep that way.

Kiwis wouldn't make very impressive gifts, but I secretly buy them for myself.   ;D

    Marshall Dodge,
Congratulations!  I hope you enjoy the Henkels.  They make a nice knife.

Bed Bath & Beyond has a set of 17 Calphalon knives that I purchased for a wedding gift.  Price was a very good $199.  After a 20% discount coupon (fairly easy to get, look around), final price was $160.  These are well reviewed on the website.  Forged knives.  The name of the knife is imprinted on the butt of each knife.  Check it out on the website.

    Edit.
Whoops, just read the post where you bought knives.  Henkle is good stuff.  I am sure they will serve her well.
