Iron sights for Barnett crossbow?
« on: February 19, 2012, 12:00:51 PM »
I just picked up a Barnett Jackal xbow.  It comes with a red-dot scope that has generally poor reviews.  I would like to put iron sights on the bow so the weapon would be a little more rugged.

It has a picatinny-style rail for the optics.

What is your advice?

Thanks

The crossbow is like this one?

If so, that's going to be tricky. Putting both front and rear sights on the rail would give you very little sight radius, and I don't see a good way to put the front sight any further forward.

Best bet is probably to get a better red dot.

    Thanks JesseL,

    1) Would there be a way to use the arrow point as a front sight?

    2) Do some people shoot Xbows instinctively?

I shoot a traditional recurve bow with no sights at various ranges just fine, so could I adapt this skill to the crossbow?

    Thanks

answers are as follows, No and No. Get a better red dot sight. The design of a xbow makes sighting down the arrow as you would on a traditional bow impossible. As for "instictive" shooting, that's only a movie thing *or professional fastdraw. If you are actually trying to hit whatever you are aiming at you need to have some sort of sighting device.

I figured most of that out after snapping off the front sight of a crossbow I have...

Is there a traditional style scope with cross hairs that is recommended? I'd prefer not to use something that requires batteries/electronics.  Archery vendors have multiple options and I'd like to get the best value.

Thanks everyone.  When I get it set up I'll post some pics of some targets.
