Talking to the Old Breed...it's always interesting.
« on: January 01, 2015, 08:40:41 pm »
So I was eating lunch the other day when three older gentlemen walked in. One recognized me, as I was one of the last trainees he taught firearms before he retired. Turns out all three were retired LEOs: two deputies and one Macon PD. Well I asked them to sit down and eat lunch with me. The one I knew had been a captain and knew that I'd liked hearing stories about the "old days". Here are a few quotes that I found interesting:

"I didn't like those 9mm autos. It wasn't the fact that they didn't shoot good but all the punks carried em. They weren't scared of them. But that old Model 25 with those big ole hunk of lead staring 'em in the face got many a hard a** to rethink what he was considering doin."

" Shoot back then the Chief didn't give a rats a** what you carried as long as it wasn't a magnum. I had a 6" .44 special that had been across more than a few belligerent drunks heads. One fella caught hell walking in with a Hi-Power in his holster and 2 spare mags on his belt. Until he pointed out that the 9mm could be any worse than that Widow Maker 38 round nose and he had more of 'em. Couldn't fault his logic myself."

" Say son, whatcha carrying today? A Smith .357? See, I told you the youngster had class."

Let's just say that quick lunch lasted over 2 hours, but I had a good time listening to the old breed.

That actually does sound interesting.  I always liked talking to Air Force old timers too, especially fellow EOD guys, for the same reason.

Old breed are always interesting. Not always "better". I had Old Timers tell me of the US Army before drug testing was introduced in 1971. Including at nuclear weapon facilities in Germany.

I'm one of the Old Breed now and it was a very hairy and terrible time around here and I'm glad its in the "days gone by" category. I, too, like to hear from the retirees but I take it all in with a huge grain of salt.

I think the young officers we have right now at my agency are the best, most professional bunch yet and we have definitely grown into a much, much better place to work. I miss a couple of the guys I used to work with but the rest are good riddance.

The last couple Late Vietnam draftees said the same thing. Things were more "fun" or relaxed in the old days, but less professional.

it was a bit of a shock to my system when I realized that I had become "One of the Old Guys".

my newest officers, their file number in the State POST certification lists, are in the 25,000's.   Mine is a 4 digit in the 8000 range.    geez. :hmm

Sounds a lot like listening to the old guys in the armoured car industry. I have heard some interesting tales. The sad thing is I am getting up there were I have worked longer than a lot of the guys and now I have a fair amount of stories of my own "from way back when".
