LEO loads...
« on: March 26, 2015, 11:23:01 am »
I'm just curious as to what other agencies are issuing in the terms of ammo and why. My agency recently went to the Gen4 Glock 17 after the local PD and Sheriffs Office consolidated to replace the myriad of HK USP 40s and 45s, Glock 37, S&W M&P 40s, and S&W99 and 5906. The Sheriffs office always issued Remington ammo so he stuck with Remington ammo for the interim. Our duty loads are:
- Remington 147 gr Golden Saber 9mm
- Remington 230 gr Golden Saber 45 ACP (SWAT officers choosing the Glock 21)
- Speer 230 gr 45 ACP Gold Dot ( SWAT HK UMP)
-Remington 110 gr +P 38 Special (BUG issued ammo)
-Federal 90 gr 380 ACP Hydra-Shok ( BUG)
-Remington 165 gr Golden Saber (BUG)
-Remington 55 gr .223 Accutip
-Hornady .223 62 gr TAP Urban
-Federal Hydra-Shok reduced recoil 12 gauge slug
-Federal OO 8 pellet reduced recoil buckshot
-Maxxstop ( formerly Pokyshok) IRP 12 gauge

It sounds like a lot of different ammo to keep up with but its pretty slimmed down from what it used to be. Our training cadre is a good mix of Patrol and investigators and they are all SWAT or former SWAT. So they are pretty good about pushing for the best in equipment and ammo. Just right now the Sheriff could get the Golden Sabers in bulk cheap right now. He also stated that he felt the 147 gr was good for a vast majority of the scenarios we might run into. The cadre are trying to see cases and testing done on the Federal HST line in the heavier grains as well as the Winchester Ranger line.

We issue Speer Gold Dots for all our pistol calibers. 9mm is 124 grain, 40 is 180 and 45 is 230 IIRC.

5.56 is Federal 55 grain TRU ballistic tips and SWAT is using Federal 55 grain Bonded soft points

We issue the Glock 31 as a side arm but we also have an open carry policy where officers can carry any weapon from an approved list. If they go that route, they must provide their own Safariland holster, mag pouches and duty quality ammo if its other than .357Sig.

Surprisingly out of 80+ officers only three went that route. One carries a ParaOrdnance of some sort, another carries an HK USP and another carries a Springfield XD.

Well then there's the narcotics squad and they all carry 1911's. Forgot about those fweaks.

Rifle-wise we issue a mix of Colt AR15-A3's, DPMS AR's, and a few Bushmasters. SWAT carries Daniel Defense Mk18's.

Shotguns are Wilson Combat Rem870's with 14" barrels.

SWAT sniper rifles are DPMS LR308's and Rem 700's.

    Ammo is as follows:
.357Sig, 125 gr. JHP Winchester T-series (Ranger Talon)
.357Sig, 125 gr. FMJ (training) Remington UMC
5.56NATO, 55 gr. ballistic tip, Winchester
5.56NATO, 55 gr. FMJ (training), Remington UMC
12 ga., Federal tactical rifled slug, low recoil
12 ga., Federal Flight Control 00 Buck
7.62NATO, 168 gr. BTHP Federal Match (sniper)

We are curently considering a switch to the Sig P220

How do you like the 357 SIG in the Glock? And why the switch?

I don't know. We switched from Hydrashocks years ago. I never heard the reasons. But the rounds have been solid when it counts.

yeah, a local politics thing, but, as my son pointed out,  29 years of carrying a gun for a living is enough, it's time to call it a day.  29 years total, 15 here as Chief.   over the next few years we'll be on the road in a 5th wheel, seeing some country we never had the time to go see before.

Winchester seems to have a lock on the market up here, for whatever reason.  RCMP use 147gr 9mm Ranger SXT, and from what I have been given to understand, regional PD's use 180gr .40 S&W SXT.  We (armored car company) use the .40 S&W load, too.  Shotgun ammo is also Winchester.

We like it just fine but .357Sig is getting harder to find and more expensive. We were a Sig department for decades and lately Glock Inc has acted like the typical German a______s they sprang from.

In addition we are undergoing a large growth in personnel with several dozen sidearms soon to be ordered. We just like the P220 and the P250 better. Nows the best time for our switch

Sadly though I haven't been on as long as some, I'm already seeing just how much politics are intertwined with law enforcement.

I was up through Cherokee recently passing through to Pigeon Forge and noticed NC State Troopers had new model Sigs. Didn't speak to long with him as he was eating. But Glock acting like a____s is news to me. They pretty much knocked out the M&Ps in service in this area.
